We had the good fortune of connecting with Deborah Beroset and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Deborah, what role has risk played in your life or career?
None of the best plot twists in my life would have shown up if I hadn’t been willing to take a risk.
Like saying yes to a job that would require me to move to Dubai when I was 20 years old, which led to my first staff writing position and getting to see a whole lot of the world.
Or resigning from a plum position in Hallmark’s innovation lab to start my own business.
Or shifting from the profitable PR and branding work I was known for, to go all in on what most excited me – which is what I’m doing now, supporting women in living a life that’s true to who they really are. I am so grateful I acted on that intuitive nudging.
And love! That’s a whole other conversation, and I’ll just say we all have some risk/reward thing going on about opening our hearts, but you gotta play to win.
People spend a lot of energy thinking about what could go wrong if they were to move forward with something new. They tend to overlook the risk of NOT making a move. When your soul is saying YES, and you keep saying NO, there’s a disconnect that happens. Your actions aren’t expressing who you really are, and some of that aliveness seeps out of you.
If you’re not willing to step into the unknown – if you’re a “no” to anything that involves some risk — your experience of big love or big success or big-time thriving will be limited to watching other people’s version of it on Netflix.
Can it be scary? Absolutely. Terrifying, sometimes. And yet some of the best things in life are escorted in the door by an intuitive leap of faith.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’m a creative muse. A lovingly badass, shamanic wisdom coach. Another way to say it: I’m a mentor and spreader of creatrix magic, energy, and love.
I fiercely and lovingly champion your uniqueness, worthiness, desires, and power to create – your moxie.
I’m honored to be a listener for inner knowing, a teacher for students of the soul, and a trusted guide for those ready to step into being an artist of life. Sometimes it looks like moving through a rite of passage, sometimes it’s imagining and creating the next chapter of their journey.
High-ranking passions: Aesthetic shamanism. The essential nature of beauty. Conscious community. Wonder. Love. Soulful self-expression. The alchemy and joy of collective effervescence.
Back in 2016 when I said goodbye to the corporate world and YES to finally going for it and creating something of my own, it didn’t look like a great idea. I’d gone through a divorce and a bankruptcy in the previous couple of years, and I had no bankroll to get me going. I was 56 and on my own in Chicago, which is not the cheapest place in the world to live.
But I did it anyway.
I know what it’s like to feel as if life has become a bit autopilot. Not like you’re not busy with things — good and productive things, even – but there’s this hunger for something more that you might not even be able to name.
The universe is saying, Hey you. Wasn’t there something you were sent here to do…or be…or experience…or contribute…that you haven’t made time and space for yet? And what was that dream, anyway? Do you even remember, or has your soul been relegated to a back seat?
In Moxie, we recognize the fact that we are ever-evolving creatures, and that it’s worth hitting the pause button to discover who you are now, at this juncture in life. What are you curious about? What do you yearn for? In what ways is this chapter of life inviting you to grow and discover new things about yourself and your desires? And what craptastic thoughts are getting in your way? In what ways are you regarding yourself as a fixer-upper, versus the glorious, complete, and rare-bird being you already are?
When you feel the most yourself — unapologetic, unabashed, and unleashed — there’s a sexy, powerful, badass life force that comes through you that I call creatrix energy. Honestly, it’s like an energy makeover.
I have witnessed so many women picking up the menu of life and ordering what they really want. Mustering the courage to date again, and then finding love. Daring to enter the art show. Learning to tango. Going after the dream job. Believing in themselves. Treating themselves as the guest of honor in their lives. Giving themselves permission to try new things, make new friends, have great sex, and to travel and create and dream and connect. Starting the business. Dressing in a way that makes them happy. Doing things they didn’t think they’d ever do, and choosing to follow their soul’s path. It’s awesome.
It all began with online programs, one of which I facilitated for more than 20 cohorts of women. From there, I developed a curriculum that took people from soul care…to awakening their unique passions and gifts…to learning how to create and fulfill on a passion project without reverting to the perfectionism, self-criticism, self-shaming, guilting, and energy-sucking grind some of us have been programmed to believe is essential to making something important happen.
A few years ago, the women in the programs made it clear they wanted a way to stay connected, and Club Moxie was born. Today, we’ve got about 100 women across the country who are part of the online community with its own private platform, and some of them have formed deep relationships and even traveled together. We have online events and new workshops led by me. There’s The Vault with all the recorded workshops, guest luminaries, artisanal playlists, all kinds of fun stuff. And best of all, kindred spirits sharing their brave, huge hearts with stories and support.
The year 2022 brought an epic shift when I got a sudden intuitive knowing it was time to move from downtown Chicago to somewhere with lots of trees, birdsong, and family nearby. Within 2 months, it was hello, Georgia! Sitting on the deck under these towering oaks is so good for my soul.
My creativity has catapulted here, and I’ve created a new program, The Flight Project, that has women move together through the spaces of unapologetic, unabashed, and unleashed. There’s woo, it stretches you, you meet your spirit guide and learn to draw upon your inner knowing – and learn some of my best secrets to causing exciting, beautiful results.
This year I’m excited to be creating some amazing in-person experiences. The first one is Camp Moxie, a rustic-luxe retreat for women with wild hearts happening in the North Georgia Mountains in November.
In January, we’re kicking off SoulFire Tribe 2024 with an in-person retreat in Tucson and then continuing the journey with virtual meet-ups. It’s a joy-full awakening of your passion, joy, courage, and creative power.
I also love facilitating Soul Jams – a totally fun way to ignite engagement and connection – and speaking to groups.
Moving into my 60s as I’ve evolved and grown my business has been a beautiful thing. At this age, I’m less inclined to put off what makes me come alive. After all, the credits will roll on this movie at some point.
No more waiting for the perfect time, or to be invited or discovered or handed a permission slip. Let’s enjoy this life, do the damn thing, and use it all up. Make your magic before poof, you’re stardust.
That, in a nutshell, is what Moxie’s about.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Before a bestie comes to town, I will most definitely stockpile some of my favorite Belgian “Dream of Truffles” chocolates) from Sought + Found. Both the sea salt and salted caramel flavors.
I will have made appointments for us with the brilliant Vivian at Salon Arcaro in Roswell, and she will ensure the hair is on point and reflecting nothing less than our glorious essence.
We’ve got to take a tour through Spirited Boutique, where I always find kimonos and baubles and bags that spark joy. The right piece from there will have you feel like the bodacious creatrix you are. (The Roswell store is within blocks of Salon Arcaro, but the Woodstock store is worth a trip, too.)
Oh, since we’re going to be so fabulous and ready for some fun, we’ll be sure to get tickets to one of High Museum’s gatherings with cocktails, art making, dancing, and epic people watching.
We’ll also have to make it to Phoenix and Dragon Bookstore with its essential oils, incense, books, crystals, card decks, and of course a resident cat calmly surveying all. If we hit the right weekend, we’ll definitely join Goddess Annika for one of her uplifting, heart-opening classes.
Oh, almost forgot. We’ll poke around some of my best hunting grounds for antique and vintage bits and bobs: Park West Vintage in Marietta always has some quirky treasure waiting for me.
Then back to my home and sanctuary for a glass of wine and gazing up at the oak trees and stars.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
For several years now, my brother Dave Beroset (founder and shamanic awareness trainer of Spiritos) and I have met weekly to support each other on the spiritual-entrepreneur path, and much magic and clarity have resulted. I’m so grateful for that.
While we have parted company, Chris Ledbetter totally deserves a shoutout for the support, love, and encouragement he provided for the first 6 years of Moxie’s existence. He never let me forget why I was doing what I was doing.
Rob Khoury, founder of Agile Rainmakers and author of a series of books on internships, saw the potential of Moxie very early on and wrote what was, for me, a pretty big check. That a seasoned investor like Rob believed in this meant the world to me – and his wise counsel over the years has been one of the things that’s seen me through.
Branding wizard Nancy Bruce was the one who said Hey sister, you’re doing some magical work here, you know that, right? Game-changing moment.
Friend and fellow writer Diane Reed brings her uncanny perception and spiritual marketing alchemy to every conversation and has sparked countless ideas for me.
My brothers Ed and Dave, sisters-in-law Marilyn and Nichole, daughters Tova and Simone, sons-in-law Ross and Nathan, parents, and other family have been a huge source of love and support, particularly when the inevitable challenges loom large.
And finally, the women in the Club Moxie community are a primary source of inspiration and support in my life. The hundreds of conversations we’ve had inform everything I create, and when I hit a rough patch, or I’m feeling puny, there’s this whole tribe of soulful women who are able to hold space, reflect back to me who I am, and be a loving, supportive presence. I haven’t always had that kind of female tribe in my life, and I never take it for granted.
