We had the good fortune of connecting with Debbie Onyibe and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Debbie, what do you attribute your success to?
If I were to accredit my success to hard work, perseverance, and diligence, I would be telling a partial truth. My success is solely a result of my relationship and encounter with Jesus Christ. He is the driving force behind my life and the projects I create, without him I would be nothing. He is my number one supporter, cheerleader, and best friend. I begin all my projects by praying, and without fail, I receive clear directions on what to do. He is the factor behind my success.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
The source of inspiration and purpose of my artwork sets it apart. I do not only create art to pass the time or to gain monetary benefit. I create to help people find their purpose and bring them into the consciousness of God’s love. The majority of life’s issues are rooted in a lack of purpose, until people discover their purpose, they may never enjoy their life. Purpose makes life worth living. Where I currently am as a professional is a result of my upbringing. My father was an entrepreneur, he taught me to think through things and raised me with a consciousness of possibility. I spent my summers as a teenager working on internships and various projects. At 18, I founded an advertising firm which remains a major source my of income to date.
The greatest lesson I learned throughout my journey is to value people. As an entrepreneur, service to mankind is my chief priority. I have become more empathic and sensitive to those in my world because each one of them is invaluable.

When people see my artwork, I want them to know that my success was not through human effort or personal ambition. God’s influence in my life and work ought to be clear to the world. At 14, my desire was to one day become the most influential woman in the world. This desire remains as an adult; however, my influence should bring glory to God.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Left to me, we would stay indoors throughout their stay because I am a radical homebody. A good time is a nice meal, an entertaining series, and quality time with those I love. However, in the spirit of being accommodating, I would ask either Caleb or Chris (shoutout fam!) where to go. They know their way around all the fun activities in Atlanta and would show us a good time.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I cannot go without giving credit to the lessons from my mentor Dr. Chris Oyakhilome. I probably would’ve been a mediocre person going through the motions of life, however, his teachings conditioned me to think and become an excellent person. He brought Christianity alive to me by explaining that it is not a religion, but rather, a relationship with a real God. I also learned that the scriptures in the bible are more than words on a written page, but they are active and potent with the ability to transform anyone’s life. I find it hard to have an inferiority complex because I am aware of my birthright as a child of God.
