We had the good fortune of connecting with Debbie Irwin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Debbie, how do you think about risk?
I think about risk as being akin to change. Having grown up in a family where we traveled for my dad’s entomology research, living in Mexico and Italy for extended periods, I became accustomed to things unfamiliar to me. That exposure to various cultures and ways of living broadened my perspective. I’ve had many interests and allowed myself to pursue them, so my experiences in life/work are quite diverse. That provides a safe foundation for risk-taking and change.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I choose D, all of the above! My journey is rather unique in that I have done many different things while on this planet. Once I came to NY to pursue my dream of being an actress, the evolution commenced… from there, to the Guggenheim to Wall Street, to “Sesame Street”, to the world of Voiceovers. Happy to share this story in more detail, as I’ve been told it’s inspirational to others.

Nothing has been easy! But when you are passionate about something that makes the pursuit so much easier. One of the things I’ve learned is that we have no idea just how much effort goes into someone else’s work. Our assumptions are that it’s no big deal… it’s just a 30-second spot, how long could that take you to record?! There’s just one edit we need, it shouldn’t take you too long. Can you make a change in the video, it should be quick… Stepping into someone else’s shoes is eye-opening and gives you compassion and appreciation for their work.

I bring smarts, savvy, sophistication, diligence, communication, and humor to every day. Being a successful voiceover actor, who has specialized in medical narration, and is now sought after for coaching, gives me tremendous pleasure. Collaborating with other people makes me a better creative. Learning from others makes me a richer person, and there’s always more to learn!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well… I am fortunate enough to have two homes. One in NYC and another in the Berkshires, so depending on which area we are talking about, my answers will be different. 🙂

In the best of times, the Berkshires offers hiking, the summer home of Edith Wharton, Tanglewood (the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra), Jacob’s Pillow, (the best of international dance companies that perform in the hills), theatre and so much more.

In New York City, the rich experiences range from people watching, to architectural sites of beauty, some of the finest museums in the world and so much more. This question is harder than I thought!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have to give the first shout-out to my mom, no longer with us, for planting the seed in my ear about ‘going back to work after being a full-time mom. (I”ll share the deets with you later!) After that, I’d say my relationship with one client, in particular, James Archer, who has since become a friend, introducing me to his world of medical animation. Thanks to conversations we’ve had, the knowledge of his industry he’s shared, advice, and projects we’ve collaborated on, I’ve built a very strong network. I call this cross-pollination with other creatives. I can explain further when we chat. 🙂
