We had the good fortune of connecting with DeAngelo Dawson “FijiBoi D-LO” and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi DeAngelo, why did you pursue a creative career?
I wanted to express myself through the music I create and mix. I’m not well with articulating my thoughts. I find it easier to express how I’m feeling and what’s on my mind thru the music.

DJing has always been fun to me, I was not expecting it to be a big career path for me until I seen how much I brought people together and inspired them to have good times in those parties.

Alright let’s move on to what sets you apart as a dj and what drives your passion for you career.
What sets me apart from other DJ’s is my passion for the people. My DJ sets are curated to give people the time of their lives. Give them an experience they can’t get no where on this earth. Also my uniqueness to how I blend my music and my taste also helps set me apart.

What got me to where I am today was a lot of hard-work. I still remember them days when nobody was looking to book me at all. I couldn’t even get a chance in the club to showcase myself. I had no big brotha in this DJ industry I had to find my own in a city I was new to. I just used the “Underdog” comments as inspiration and fuel to start getting myself known. I had to do so many parties for cheap. I enjoyed it all tho. It was fun going into those gigs proving myself. My first party I ever did, everyone knew I was DJing for the first time and after that party they all came up to me and had to ask again “You really just started DJing” I told them yeah. It came so naturally to me, I was proud of myself being able to adapt to those tough situations and mold the narrative.

Lessons I learned was not everyone has your best interest at heart either. I had countless people use me for what I can provide and never give me the recognition I felt was due. Countless people seen how much influence I had over my school and just people in general and wanted to be apart of that or take what I built behind my back. It hurt but it showed me peoples true colors. I never let it stop me tho. The hardships in life is what makes my story great.

I want the world to know DJ FijiBoi is a global brand. I will be traveling the world thru my talents and bringing enjoyment to the rooms my music touches.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’d start them out by grabbing some food of course. We would first hit Pizza Baby (CLT). I’m a huge food person. Eating some food that’s good that you may have never had is like the feeling you get when you hear a new song from a new artist. It opens something up in your mind for real.

After we’d hit some clothing store and go shopping, we would stop at Street commerce first grab some dope designer pieces then we would go visit some local brands in the city. After we would go visit the Bridge charlotte and link up with some of the creatives in the area and help build their network up. Afterwards if we in the mood we might hit a club or two up see what the vibes are in the city. I usually go to Encore or Explicit in Charlotte.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
