We had the good fortune of connecting with Daysia Chanelle and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Daysia, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
My name is Daysia Chanelle, I’m from Queens, New York. I have a unique blend of Haitian, Puerto Rican, and Cuban heritage. My diverse background has sculpted me into an open-minded individual, embracing the tapestry of cultures woven into my family history. Growing up in the Catholic school environment, particularly in the choir, unveiled my passion for singing. It was within those hallowed halls that I discovered my voice, and I would retreat home to translate my emotions into song lyrics etched in notebooks. Inspired by the church organ, I immersed myself in the world of piano, adding depth to my musical journey. This upbringing not only fostered my musical career but also shaped my spirituality, creating a harmonious blend of diverse influences that define who I am today.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My music seamlessly weaves together soulful melodies, jazzy undertones, rhythmic rap elements, smooth R&B vibes, and the energetic essence of hip-hop. As a writer with emotional intelligence and empathic qualities, I have the ability to guide individuals in connecting with their emotions. This skill is evident in my music, where I use my way with words to authentically express my true feelings, embracing vulnerability. Having roots in poetry, songwriting becomes a heightened and more expressive outlet for my poetic sensibilities making me stand out in the creative landscape. Throughout my journey, I’ve dedicated over 10,000 hours to refining my craft, encompassing recording, writing, engineering, and building vital connections. Consistently collaborating with a dedicated circle has been instrumental in achieving my current success, emphasizing the importance of longevity in creative pursuits. Hard work and unwavering consistency serve as the linchpins of my journey, acknowledging that challenges are inherent in the path to success. Navigating relationships that tested my faith and intuition prompted introspection, leading me to rediscover my younger self and realign with my life’s true purpose. I advocate for a supportive circle of trustworthy individuals and moments of solitude to unveil your authentic self without external influences. Embracing mistakes as personal lessons and maintaining the perspective that everything will be okay has been a guiding outlook, recognizing that emotions are transient. One significant lesson from my journey is to avoid limiting your thinking to a single perspective, as growth is a continuous process. Tomorrow is uncertain, so refrain from confining yourself to today’s mindset. I aim to convey that I genuinely care about people, even those I haven’t met. My empathy extends to all, and my aspiration is to contribute to creating a more positive world, especially for the youth. Through my music, I aspire to achieve mastery in fostering a better and uplifting vibrational atmosphere.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m a woman who appreciates simplicity, finding joy in parks, nature, museums, and exploring different food spots. A top recommendation is Gantry State Plaza Park – my friends and I often bring a blanket to immerse ourselves in the skyline, creating a personal and serene vibe. Washington Square Park is another favorite, offering a creative ambiance where you’re bound to connect with interesting individuals. Urban Vegan Roots, a black-owned vegan spot, captures the essence of music industry culture. Their black bean taco is an absolute favorite. Sundays at Dirty Taco with .99 cent mimosas are hard to resist. For exceptional soul food and a lively atmosphere, 95 South on Franklin Avenue in Brooklyn is a go-to, featuring a live DJ daily.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I extend my appreciation to my mother for always supporting my endeavors. During my college years, faced with the desire to pivot from softball to pursue music, she provided encouragement for me to persevere and complete my academic journey. Her ongoing support in my musical pursuits, absent of judgment, is something that I cherish. I also acknowledge my father, whose introduction paved the way for a significant connection in the music industry – my producer, Zay Guevara. Beyond delivering remarkable beats, Zay has meticulously mixed and mastered each of my songs, fostering my growth as an artist. Over the past five years, he has generously allowed me to use his studio, providing a platform for me to learn the intricacies of self-recording. Zay’s influence extends beyond the studio, facilitating connections with music industry luminaries such as Fuse 808Mafia, Araab Musik, Motif Alumni, and Shanell Red. These invaluable associations have resulted in notable features on the upcoming Fuse & Araab album titled “Womanizer.” I’ve submitted numerous song placements through the guidance of the Grammy-nominated Shanell Red, connections that would not have materialized without Zay’s pivotal role in my journey. And a special shout-out goes to Blvff, my engineer and vocal coach. Since April, he’s been an integral part of my artistic journey, elevating my skills and boosting my confidence in exploring background vocals and harmonies I was hesitant to unleash before. My last shoutout has to go to KAi, I was spiritually broken and unmotivated at the beginning of the year and he really brought me back to life, I’ll never forget that. He also makes music you can find his song “Skip the Confessions” on all streaming platforms
