We had the good fortune of connecting with Dawn Hull and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dawn, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
Taking risks has played a crucial role in shaping my professional career and personal growth. It has taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of trusting my instincts. I often view risk as an opportunity for growth and innovation. Each of my entrepreneurial ventures, from OliverAlert to aKeKee to CandlestickCoasters, involved taking risks and stepping into the unknown. OliverAlert is a website for lost and found pets. aKeKee was the first vertical pet search engine. CandlestickCoasters are repurposed candlesticks used as personal side tables, plant stands, or catch-all trays.

When I decided to start making CandlestickCoasters, I simply needed a personal side table to place my drink. CandlestickCoasters was driven by a sense of necessity and a strong belief in the simplicity of this creative idea. I woke up last August (on my late father’s birthday) with a determination to make it happen, drawing on the same drive and passion that fueled my previous projects. I sent a “I’m going to do this text” then secured the domain for CandlestickCoasters.com. I got to work.

While there is always a level of uncertainty and fear associated with risk-taking, I have found that the rewards and opportunities that come from stepping outside of my comfort zone are well worth it. I am grateful for the experiences and lessons learned from taking these chances, and I look forward to continuing to push myself and explore new possibilities in the future.

Virginia Woolf said, “Odd how the creative power at once brings the whole universe to order,” and she was right. Sometimes it just clicks and that’s what happened to me with CandlestickCoasters. I simply had to do it.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My story is not linear. I work full time in risk consulting for a Fortune 500 company, and I cherish my social time with friends and family when I’m not at work. I find inspiration in everyday life, and artwork fills my home.

I’m proud of turning a carport into a cozy cabana. It’s a small testament to resourcefulness and imagination. Excitingly, CandlestickCoasters emerged from this process, combining practicality and aesthetics. I’m a huge fan of Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, Larry Page, and Sergey Brin who started their highly esteemed brands in a garage. These masterminds have shaped my design, technical, and customer experience goals. All of that to say, CandlestickCoasters started in a carport!

For me, this idea sparked when I faced difficulties finding the perfect side table. Brick-and-mortar shops were closing, so I got creative. Seeing candlesticks at a local store later sparked an idea: I could make my own tables.

I’ve learned a lot since then. A “coming soon” release includes a handmade top from a local artist and a 19th century candlestick holder crafted in Leeds, England. It is called, “All Roads Leeds to You” and will debut on my social sites and booth soon. Sometimes unconventional solutions yield the best results. Trust your instincts; they led me to CandlestickCoasters which represents innovation, resourcefulness, and unique one of a kind designs.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Day 1 (It is a lot to do, but I call this a Square Crawl.)
1. Two Birds: Start your culinary adventure at Two Birds, my best friend and I love their famous deviled eggs.
2. Tsunami: Next, head to Tsunami for Asian fusion tacos.
3. Rocketfizz: Satisfy your sweet tooth with a visit to Rocketfizz, where you’ll find an array of candies and sodas. Some of the soda flavors are unimaginable!
4. Sweet Melissa Records: Don’t miss this spot for music lovers! Browse vinyl records and soak in the nostalgic vibes from their antique and book store.
5. Hamp & Harry’s: Enjoy a craft cocktail with a foam art design reminiscent of Monet’s paintings.
6. Fountain Selfies: Capture memories at the fountain in the center of the park. Remember to take in the history and charm of Marietta Square while you’re there!

Day 7:
1. Last but not least, Saturday mornings are best at the Marietta Artisan and Farmers Markets followed by the Marietta Antique Mall: Visit us at CandlestickCoasters and all the other antiques, collectibles, art, and home décor booths.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mom is a huge factor in my life and I’m grateful for my aunt lending her talents along the way. Thankfully, I am blessed to have a support system that includes family, friends, and loved ones. Their encouragement, guidance, and feedback are critical components that contribute to my success. I firmly believe that we can’t navigate life alone. Surrounding myself with people who challenge me, inspire me, and tell me the truth is essential. It may not always make my journey easier, but that’s exactly the point. My influencers don’t just make things simpler; they push me to reach my full potential and drive me to give my best.

As an avid Rick Rubin fan of The Creative Act, I’ve discovered and respect the need for balance. He once said, “Understanding how you feel in the face of other voices, without second guessing yourself, is probably the single most important thing to practice as an artist.”
