We had the good fortune of connecting with Dawn Halfkenny and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dawn, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
I pretty much stick to the same routine. It’s been working good for me so far. I believe the most important key to life, is to take care of yourself physically, mentally and spiritually. I eat right, exercise daily and have a consistent prayer life. I’m also the type of person who has a daily “to do” list. Being a creative individual, I often find myself moving around almost nonstop; but I definitely rest when needed. When you take care of yourself properly you feel good and it shows in your work.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am honored to be featured a second time. Thank you Voyage.
I love how the film industry has grown in Atlanta. Many different studios and production companies have given the talent here opportunities to work. -For that, I am forever grateful.
As I’ve mentioned before, I started at Tyler Perry Studios as background talent. With a driven mentality, I was able to stay focus and my career has been at a steady climb ever since. No, my journey hasn’t been easy, but as Denzel Washington once said, “Ease is a greater threat to progress than hardship.” Therefore, I continue to thrive and press forward.
My morning prayer includes being able to encourage, motivate and inspire someone, just as someone has done for me. I know my purpose in life and I hope that peace and love continues to brew from it. Especially during this time when it’s most needed in the world.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love life and love to have fun; however my idea of “fun” is more relaxing. I enjoy hiking. Sweetwater Creek has some really awesome, peaceful trails. I love to eat. My favorite brunch spot to go to is Atlanta Breakfast Club. (@_atlantabreakfastclub) Everything on the menu is delicious. (yes I’ve tried everything) Their chicken and waffles/shrimp and grits is amazing! My favorite bakery hands down is My Fair Sweets. (@myfairsweets) (My mouth is watering just thinking about their cupcakes. lol)
Whether I’m attending an event or just maintaining my healthy hair. I swing by Kingdom Glam to see Al Watson (@prince_khyseam) or ask Elijah Cohen (@elijahcohen33) He does my makeup too. I get a mani/pedi at E Nails (Eminence Nail and Spa) in Buckhead. Mya (@divinelyxcreations) and Don always take great care of me there. When I have time, I like to go to the St. Regis spa or Treat your Feet. I shop all over, mainly in shoppes of Buckhead. Last, since ‘laughter is good for your soul’ Atlanta Comedy Club has the funniest comedians. A few of my hilarious friends have performed there.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My good friend, or as I call him, my brother Anthony O. Dalton III (@therealanthonydalton) definitely deserves a shoutout. I am so proud of him. I’ve seen his journey blossom into this beautiful career. To know his grind, and see how he continues to have faith in God, he motivates me to keep pushing for greatness. -Such a genuine, dope soul who uplifts and speaks nothing but positivity over everyone. Thank you Anthony for being a huge inspiration in my life.
