We had the good fortune of connecting with David Dodge and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi David, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
It’s a constant struggle. I love what I do, and I’m always thinking about it, so the line between relaxation and ‘working’ is always blurry. The most useful thing I’ve learned is to appreciate the quiet moments. Working for yourself is always somewhat unpredictable. After several years of putting in the work, forming relationships and dealing with the crazy schedules, I’ve gained the resources to take back a little more control of my schedule to create that space for myself.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m an Art Director and Motion Designer. I create static and moving digital art for brands. My path began at a TV station 14 years ago. After that, I worked at a few studios before striking out on my own 3 years ago. I’ve had a lot of help from some incredible people along the way, and I’ve met some of my closest friends in the process. Regarding the work itself, I’m not particularly married to one discipline within motion (i.e. 2d, 3d, cel, vfx, etc.). I love the variety of work I get to do, and I find the not knowing what’s coming next exciting.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
One of my favorite things is showing people my city. I love Atlanta, and it’s a truly inspiring place to live. But, given the current situation, if a friend came to visit me right now, I’d show them my parking lot. We’d sit 12 feet apart, and we’d both be wearing masks.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’m grateful for Jennifer Dodge, my wife, an incredible writer, for being my biggest source of support and encouragement. I’ve never had anyone believe in me like she does, and its genuinely the most incredible feeling. Thanks to Eric Del Greco for opening my eyes to this whole world and giving me the kick in the ass I needed. I appreciate Tom Williams and Karl Dunn, especially Karl, for hiring me and putting up with all the subsequent nonsense I undoubtedly put him through. Thanks to my parents, the buddies, and rollerblading.
