We had the good fortune of connecting with DARYL FUNN and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi DARYL, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I have always wanted to be my own boss. In control of the narrative. When I graduated from college there was a company that tried to convince me they didn’t wear suits/uniforms. That they wore khakis and polos not realizing that was a uniform. So i knew I would have to grind and make things happen because no one really knew who I was.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My focus is to not WORK but provide an EXPERIENCE in every encounter from a client, to a student, to an audience member. Walking away I want people to have a lasting impression. Studying, learning, and practicing are the foundation for my success. If I had to say what one thing got me to where I am professionally I would say making each person feel as if they are the only one that matters. This is how a friend described me. I would say it is my investment in the time to really listen to people. There are always challenges. You can’t please everyone not to mention being one person getting overloaded, my best practice has been to know when to walk away or when to build partnerships so I can recommend an alternative. The biggest lesson that I continue to carry is that in my 50 years of living is that the greatest ability is AVAILABILITY. When you think of me, Mistafunn™ the brand, my story it is imperative that the moment(s) are seen as priceless.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Maaaaan listen, when my folks come to visit we have to spend some time in the city of Decatur, as DBA president i want them to see all the cool things to do in the area and the fact that you never have to leave because what you want is within walking distance. We would have to try food from La Petite Marche, Sweet Melissa, Cala Bar and Grille, and Revolution Doughnuts, Thursday night we have to go to Urban Grind for poetry and the amazing teas and zucchini bread. So many places to hit up Like Kat’s Kafe, and Richard’s Variety Store for some serious shenanigans. Lastly we would have to check out a stepper set.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I am in no way an island. I want to always thank God first for any and every opportunity and the people They use to make things possible. With that said Chichi Iwuorie is proof positive that when you invest in people at some point a great return will come. I would like to shout out Theresa Davis, Karen G, and Urban Grind owner Cassandra.
