We had the good fortune of connecting with Darwyn Young and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Darwyn, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Simply put, I was tired of the corporate rat race! Also, I came to the realization that all of the work I’ve put in to build businesses within that environment, none of it is transferable and has a direct long term impact financially on my family/children

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My company was born out of my understanding that real estate is the key to financial freedom and wealth for so many. In the black community, I looked around and found that although a number of my friends were homeowners (which is a great first step), that they didn’t really “play the game” of real estate to maximize roi on their investment and build long term wealth. They were looking at all of the things most first time buyer review, location, school district, etc…but didn’t look at the home as the true investment that it is. Don’t get me wrong these are very intelligent people, but something clicked for me in those moments, and for me what was missing from the equation is/was that they didn’t have the access to information or mentor ship to know how.

Professionally, I’ve had a number of different skills sets – I’ve worked in the retail sector at a time, Human Resources, Project Management and most recently as the VP of Market Operations for a commercial real estate firm. For me, I look the approach that I wanted to learn as much about business from every angle to grow myself professionally for the eventual elevation into running my own company – long story short, using the corporation to grow your skill set with a longer term plan in mind to us those acquire skills.

Was corporate easy, absolutely not! I always felt somewhat out of place because of the energy and effort that I and other put into these relatively small endeavors in the enterprise, hoping along the way that you earn enough or impress enough to move to the next level. What kind of existence is that? Not one I aspired to have. With all of that I realized that it was necessary season to grow myself profess so that I can make an even larger impact on my own path and know without a doubt what works and doesn’t work for me.

I would like the world to know that my brand at its core is about helping people. Pulling back the cover on an industry and process that can seem impossible and making the homeownership or investing Dream a reality for my clients.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Atlanta is truly a city that has something for everyone, so if I know my friends like I know my friends they’d want to sight see, eat well, go to a live sporting evening and enjoy some nightlife, so we’d visit the new Bellwood Quarry on the Nw side of Atlanta – the city’s largest park and just opened so really cool to see. We’d then go to RA Sushi in midtown to grab a bite to eat, thereafter we’d try to catch an Atlanta Braves game at Suntrust/Truitt Park and enjoy the attractions at the battery.

One of my favorite parts of town is East Atlanta village – offers that cool artsy vibe with galleries, specialty shops, bars, etc and only 5/10 minutes from downtown so that would be one of the recommendations for sure also.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
A person. Definitely my Aunt Kim – she has always encouraged and supported my ideas/dreams and continue to fortify that if I use the gifts God has given me, I’ll always be successful. She is an incredible person that always sees the best in people, and definitely kept me from going down the wrong path.

Also, a book that was really powerful for me was 7 habits of highly effective people. This book laid out foundation principles for each person to apply to their individual goals and belief that help them on their path – it’s a must read!
