We had the good fortune of connecting with Darrius They/Them and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Darrius, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I wish I had this magical story about how I started my business, but I don’t. During the Covid-19 2020 shutdown, I started mixing sea moss into my coffee. This was before I knew much about the science of coffee, all I knew was I needed it every day so why not mix in sea moss to sustain my health while the outside was dirty? I would combine my sea moss into my coffee daily and tell people and they thought I was insane because sea moss doesn’t have the best taste on its own. Granted, it didn’t taste great but I was committed to making this a “thing”. As time went on, I perfected the recipe for myself, and one day as I was driving the name Oshun Brew came to my head. I meditated, and then Oshun Brew Coffee LLC manifested itself. The Yoruba Orisha, Oshun, controls the waters and uses the elements from the sea and Earth to bring forth her powers. She spreads confidence, joy, and love- this aligns with my life purpose. I want to bring confidence, joy, wellness, and love to all people through Oshun Brew Coffee, sorbet, and whatever else the universe gives me to share with the masses.

What should our readers know about your business?
Oshun Brew Coffee LLC is cold brew coffee with a twist. All of our coffee is made in small batches with alkaline water. This process takes about 3-5 days for the coffee to brew which creates a smooth, refreshing coffee. Our coffee is infused with sea moss and mushrooms that support gut function, mental health, and sexual libido. Starting Oshun Brew Coffee was not easy. There are many parts of selling a beverage that they did not teach me in business school. Licensing, production, labeling, content creation, etc; it’s a lot! However, I relied on my support and my community to help me overcome every obstacle. I haven’t prayed this hard in years, but I am attending to my altar every day to ensure my business is getting the guidance it needs.
This entire process has taught me that we have all been given the tools to create whatever reality we want. There is no instruction manual on how to use these tools, we just have to tap into ourselves and our higher consciousness to live the lives we deserve. I want everyone to know that Earth has given us the tools to live a life of wellness and abundance, we just have to listen.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The first place we’re going is the Honey Pot Art and Energy in Little 5 Points to check out all the cool things they offer and to purchase some Oshun Brew Coffee! Then we’ll head over to Bar Vegan to get some good food and vibes. After that, we would have to go on a nice nature walk at Sweetwater Creek which is my favorite place to hike.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Ancestral support has been on my side from the beginning of this process. I could not do any of this without the work, prayers, and motivation from my ancestors. My grandmother has left this realm, but I know she is with me every day working things out. Major shoutout to my sister, Chauntee, owner of Effortless Beauty. She listens to me ramble about all the things and I love her for that. Huge shoutout to my bestest friend in the whole world, Designer Ace created the logos for Oshun Brew Coffee and Sorbet.
