Meet Darren Paltrowitz | Author, Investigator & Host

We had the good fortune of connecting with Darren Paltrowitz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Darren, how does your business help the community?
Most importantly, to me at least, my interviews generally skew positive and share positive messaging and/or projects which aim to make the world a better place. Or at least leave it with more positivity. The product reviews and live coverage I do also tries to take a similar approach.
Rather than just telling people why someone or something is great, my content aims to showcase the journey that someone went on to create, and that often entails hard work, commitment and positivity. If I don’t enjoy or “get” something, generally I will not cover it.
The world needs creativity and art to keep going. But at the same time, artists generally do need some sort of validation to keep going. Sort of a “full circle” approach to covering various facets of arts and entertainment.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am of the belief that someone’s weaknesses can often transition into being their strengths, or at least what sets them apart and makes them unique and memorable. So are my interviews the best interviews that anyone will watch? Absolutely not. But almost always they are friendly, positive, concise, address the person’s latest project(s), and aim to encourage the viewers via providing knowledge they may be able to apply to their own lives. The majority of my interviews also manage to work in questions about Van Halen, Long Island and/or professional wrestling, often leading the subject(s) to go “off-script,” which I enjoy.
When I started doing interviews as a teenager, I scripted all of my questions. These days I may have a few bullet-points prepared, but generally it’s a conversation that hits on the needed topics. The “Paltrocast” has evolved into being a fun creative outlet for me, since I not only improvise the interviews and write the related article(s), but also edit the videos and create the social media copy. Beyond that, behind the scenes, there is often a lot of communication with handlers and representative for the interview subject(s). In other words, a 15-minute interview probably entailed hours of work for me.
I still don’t love watching or listening to my interviews, yet I am proud about having put thousands of interviews out into the world that have my full-on creative vision within them. Slow, steady and organic growth of an audience, paired with learning how to be creative in new ways over the past few years.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If they were visiting me here in Long Beach, Long Island, New York and we had a full day, it’d probably be a mix of time at the beach, walking or cycling our city’s boardwalk, checking out a few breweries or pubs (e.g. Bright Eye, Shine’s Bar), grabbing a few appetizers at excellent local eateries (e.g. Nagahama, Das Biergarten, LB Social), and seeing who’s around. Sometimes Long Beach has festivals or notable live events — e.g. comedian Ryan Reiss regularly brings in major comedy headliners to Borelli’s, Long Beach Public Library brought in Run-DMC’s Darryl “DMC” McDaniels earlier this year for a live performance and Q&A which I hosted, Bright Eye often hosts live music and comedy — but those are not needed to have a great time in town.
Within a few towns of here, if breweries and distilleries are your thing, Oceanside has 5 of those the last time I checked. Rockville Centre is a fun nearby town also when it comes to food and drinks. Island Park has a few top-notch restaurants and a great outside bar on the water called Dox. Atlantic Beach has its own boardwalk. Point Lookout has some fun seafood-centric spots on the water and usually 1 or 2 big free outdoor concerts a year. Jones Beach and its Live Nation-booked amphitheater are about 20 minutes away by car. Plenty of other towns with theaters and live entertainment, highly-rated restaurants, state parks, etc.
And if you want more of a “city” vibe, we are less than an hour from Manhattan via train. So there’s always something to do around here, rain or shine.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My wife Melissa. Back in the Fall last year, I had a few things going on which were discouraging, and she helped snap me out of it. This led to the creation of Paltrocast.com as a publication — at that point it was just a placeholder domain for my podcast and TV show — which has since become something I work on every day. Similarly, my parents have been incredibly supportive of all this, and thankfully they don’t mind their last name being a pun for so many of my projects (e.g. Paltrocast, Paltrobox).
