We had the good fortune of connecting with Danny Steele and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Danny, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
for me, i have discovered the positive effect of thinking of my life as a series of writing myself permission slips – often i told myself a story that i couldn’t do something (which was primarily based in fear), i used to get overwhelmed with all the things i wanted to do creatively – so i gave myself permission to start thinking of living and having a career in the US as a British actor writer and coach. I took a risk and called myself an author before i had a book published, i called myself an actor before i had taking an acting class for example . even though there was risks involved in all of these pursuits, thinking of each one as a series of permission slips that had to be mentally (or physically) written made them easier to break down and work through
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
my Initial challenge was getting the visa to move to Atlanta from the UK, the application took place over Covid which delayed proceedings but once my Visa was approved it was an easy transfer. I work as a creative multipotentialite, which means i wear many hats and give myself permission to enjoy wearing them all. Working as a Coach, an Author, an Actor, being CEO of two companies based in the UK, Union Management and Actors Coaching International- i’m living the life i created and whilst it can be scary to move and start a life in another country, i gave myself permission to imagine the possibilities. what it looked like. A lot of people don’t do something because they need to know 100% what it’s going to be like. I would say you can never fully know and you can run at something, like i have done, at 50% and just trust yourself more.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
our first day we would walk along the Beltline starting on or near Ponce, we could cycle or walk and the weather is almost guaranteed to be nice, we’d stop off for dinner at Mary Mac’s Tea Room on Ponce De Leon for some traditional Southern hospitali. The Second day we would also spend outside by visiting either the Zoo in Grant Park or the Aquarium (and if we go to the Aquarium, the famous Yard Milkshake Bar opposite does amazing dairy free shakes. A trip to the Plaza movie theatre also on Ponce De Leon would be essential as i love film and the Plaza is steeped in History being the oldest working theatre in Atlanta. You can see the old posters on the walls when you walk in and it is said there are ghosts in the building. Day 3 would be resting in the morning and having a late lunch at Fellini’s Pizza where they don’t just make lovely pizza’s ( their white pizza is to die for), the pizza boxes are a tribute to The Beatles Sgt. Pepper’s” album cover. For late drinks i would recommend 97 Estoria in Cabbagetown where my girlfriend and i found quite by accident just a few weeks ago and also saw Cee-Lo Green there having a quiet drink and so if it’s alright with Cee-Lo…..!
I’m a huge fan of thrift and vintage stores so the following day would be spent in Little Five Points where we have Rag’ORama as well as Junkman’s Daughter and The Clothing Warehouse – I have a wonderful pair of pants and second hand sneakers i bought at Rag’oRama which i adore.
Day 5 i’d be tempted to spend out of the city and take them to somewhere like Stone Mountain Park set around the worlds largest piece of granite – it has festivals there all year round as well as many attractions such as scenic walks, mountain trails, the skyride and laser shows.
the following day would be a weekend so a visit to Atlanta would be essential to see Atlanta United Soccer Team or the Atlanta Braves Baseball
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I recognise the many people who have supported and mentored me on this journey – I would like to credits the following: Jennifer for her wisdom and for saying yes to life, I have never met anyone so open and who sees life in the unique she does. To Anthony Meindl Actors Workshop in Atlanta
