We had the good fortune of connecting with Daniel Dorfman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Daniel, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I had the fortunate experience of growing up in a house of entrepreneurs. My father and mother started their own company in 1984, three years before I was born. I spent a lot of my childhood in a crowded office playing with whatever I could find and watching my parents build a company from scratch that is still around today. A lot of what I experienced, I’ve tried to replicate in our own business. I learned that to build something you need to live it, to embrace it fully, and that you can outwork almost every problem. There were no days off in the Dorfman house but we worked together as a family.

What should our readers know about your business?

  • Roots is actually my third business adventure and no it’s never easy. The first one went decently, the second didn’t work out but was a valuable learning experience, and Roots is already changing how we view real estate and it’s only just begun. The Roots Real Estate Fund democratizes the asset empowering everyone to participate and to build wealth through real estate. We’ve introduced a unique program called “Live in it Like You Own it®,” which flips the script on the typical landlord/tenant dynamic by collaborating with our residents and creating partners not tenants. By taking care of their homes and staying current on rent, residents can build their wealth by up to $3,600 in two years and up to $10,000 in five years through rewards and investing in the Roots Fund.
Since July 2021, we have bought, renovated, and filled homes for nearly 250 residents who are building wealth while they rent. Roots pays $150 quarterly rebates and a yearly $200 bonus to residents who pay rent on time, provide quarterly videos of their home, and are good neighbors, all while consistently providing an average 16 percent annual return to investors.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We live in East Atlanta, so we typically will stay around here. We will hit Emerald City for breakfast, stopping by Plants and Coffee along the way. Then venture to get the Unicorn wings from Fire Pit Pizza Tavern for lunch, which are the best in the city in my opinion. Then walk it off on the BeltLine, stopping along the way aiming to get to Inman Park’s Beetle Cat for oysters and apps on the patio. Then if we can get in we would target a dinner at BoccaLupo to be finished off with a nightcap at Flat Iron or Midway in the village.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
For the past 15 years of my life I’ve had the privilege to have my best friend and partner, Rosanne, standing by my side with unwavering support. She has journeyed with me, through troubled seas and calm waters. She has never doubted me and given me the space to chase dreams, some of them have worked and some have not but no matter what she has always been there encouraging me to go forward. Having a person in your life who truly listens and understands is a gift that can not be measured, and I am forever grateful for her.
