Meet Dani Washington: Scent Designer + World Traveler

We had the good fortune of connecting with Dani Washington and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dani, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When I started my business, my thought process was that of having a sense of freedom. I had just returned to the US from spending a year in Spain, and I was absolutely missing all of the travel opportunities afforded to me by living in Europe. I missed being able to take a weekend and head to Portugal or spend a few days in Morocco. I wanted to create an outlet of sorts, so I set out to create a company that gave me the nostalgic feeling of being in these various places while also allowing others the chance to smell these places through my nose in the same way that people who share their photos allow others to see destinations and places through their eyes. Memories are closely tied with a sense of smell so it was a natural fit for me to decide to create a home fragrance brand based on various destinations.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I craft wanderlust-inspired scents that are based on my travels. It’s been a winding road to the creation of Amor Más, but from my various stints abroad. I had the opportunity to study in Exeter, UK and travel to Malta and Italy while there and spent an “Alternative Spring Break” in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. After I graduated university I moved abroad to Spain and traveled to Portugal, Denmark, and Morocco. It certainly wasn’t easy, things seemed like a puzzle but I am very happy that I was able to eventually construct the puzzle piece by piece to create something beautiful. Along the way I learned to trust in myself and my instincts as well as being patient with the process of creating my scents and products. I want the world to know that this brand is a labor of love. I absolutely “get high on my own supply” and use my products almost exclusively because I believe in them and the ingredients. I spent many months (and sometimes the better part of a year) crafting the products and sourcing ingredients to ensure that they are not only non-toxic but also plant-based. These are products that you can feel good about using on your skin and in your household because there are no icky ingredients whose names that you can’t pronounce or have adverse side-effects.Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family and friends definitely deserve a shoutout for their support of the idea and being my first testers of the products. I’m lucky to have friends who also love to travel and give guidance on different notes that they’d love to smell in a scent. Particularly, Tammy from Soul and Story Inc, I am so grateful to her for her support in the creation of Amor Más and its various scents.
