We had the good fortune of connecting with Dani Joy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dani, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When I started my business 6yrs ago I had nothing. I had just got fired from my job, which wasn’t the best to begin with. I had lost my car. My apartment. I was at my lowest. I remember thinking to myself I do not wanna go back to work. Ive always loved fashion and over the years I became pretty fashionable. So I was like I’m going to open a boutique. I talked to my husband, mom, and friends about it and everyone told me to go for it. So I took my unemployment checks of $275/wk to purchase inventory & Vanity A was born.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
People will look at my business now and think this was overnight but it wasn’t. It’s been a long 6yrs. I went through every emotion possible to get to this point but I never gave up. Having a strong support system got me through a lot with my business. I’m a firm believer in you’re only as strong as your tribe and mine is very strong. I think people should also know that deciding to take a risk on a dream that no one else can fully see but you is never easy. There will be losses. Tears shed. Doubt. & I’ve learned over the years to accept that. It is apart of the journey. I’m so proud of myself for never giving up. Because if I did I wouldn’t be having this interview with you today. & Now Vanity A Luxury Boutique is a luxury brand. #VainGang is a family. & I’m proof that you can be grinding for years & go from being overlooked to in high demand.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well I’m honestly a homebody now so I don’t know much of anything that goes on in the city lol but I do love great food and drinks. One of my favorite places is Char. They have the best pecan pie and blueberry lemon drops. I also love Sage. It’s black owned. Great vibe & food. Stix in Collierville. & Make sure you sit at the hibachi grill. Red Koi has the best sushi in Memphis (to me) lol I can go on and on about food but those are just a few.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My support system is unreal. I tell them all the time I could have never did this alone. On the days I wanted to give up they were there. Pushing me. Encouraging me. Supporting me. Reassuring me that I was going to make it. I appreciate them beyond words.

My husband, my parents, my daughter, my brothers, my family, my friends, and my GANG!!!

Thank you all !!!
