We had the good fortune of connecting with Dani Congdon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dani, how do you think about risk?
I think risk is a necessary part of success, as is failure. Failure is the unfortunate consequence of a risk gone wrong, but with failure comes growth and change – which will inevitably lead to success (even if it’s not in the way one originally anticipated). But the other consequence of risk is success. You never know if you don’t try, right?
For me, and most artists, simply the decision to pursue a career in art was a risk. There is no guarantee that it will work out, but the alternative of an unfulfilling career and a life seems so bleak that the risk is worth it. I will never regret taking that risk.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I really enjoy exploring creating work that empowers and uplifts. I also using duality to explore complex topics and issues in visually beautiful ways that encourage deeper understanding. I think there is something really interesting about an illustration that seems beautiful at first but the longer you look the more you understand.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m such a fan of nature and Savannah has so many amazing opportunities to be outside in the elements. I would have to pop over to Tybee Island for a beach day or have a picnic in Forsyth park.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I absolutely could not have made it to where I am today without the help of my very supportive parents who didn’t shout at me when I told them I was going to go to art school. I have had a menagerie of amazing teachers and professors who inspired and guided my journey, especially Megan Berkheiser who might actually be superwoman. Lastly I’d like to thank my boyfriend, Lane, who consistently makes sure that I am fed and watered during long studio hours. I haven’t withered away yet thanks to him.
