We had the good fortune of connecting with Dana Abercrombie and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dana, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Ever since I was a young girl, I have always loved the arts. I have family who are also into the arts. I have family members who are musicians and painters, so I have always been around it. I pursued a career in acting because I wanted to give people what it gives me: Joy. I remember when I was in high school, my English teacher took us on a field trip to see a play at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta called “The Old Settler.” I remember sitting in my seat and just being in awe of the performances and the story itself. It gave temporary escape from my world. I left the theatre saying that’s what I want to do. I want to take the words of a script and bring them to life through my performances and allow people to have a temporary escape from the world. I want to create and tell stories that will inspire people. That is why I pursued a creative career.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m an actress, The lessons I’ve learned along the way is to follow my own instincts and not let anyone else deter me from my dreams. One other lesson is that there are a lot of disappointments in life and in this business, but I can’t let it get me down. There are surprises, but whatever comes my way I have to accept and make the best of it, keeping in mind what my ultimate goal is. I continue to work hard and depend on my faith in God to get me to where He wants me to be.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Hmmm.. My best friend and I love to laugh, so I would take her to the Atlanta Comedy Theatre so we can get our laugh on. Then, we would swing by “SluttyVegan”, which is an awesome vegan restaurant. I would also take her to Piedmont Park for the summer concerts (when Covid has gone away). In addition. we would probably go to TOP GOLF. They have great food and drinks. For shopping, we would probably go to Atlantic Station. At Atlantic Station there are clothing stores, movie theater, and nice restaurants. Finally to top it off, we would find a karoake spot since we both love to sing. Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shout out God. God is the one who gave me my dreams and has provided for me and has given me the ability to do what I love to do. I attended Tennessee State University and majored in theatre. There was a theatre professor that became a mentor for me and really encouraged me to really pursue a career in acting. His name was Barry Scott. He really believed that I could do this and always gave me words of encouragement. I owe him a lot. I also would like to shout out Bobby and Renee Peoples. They gave me my first acting jobs right after I graduated from college. They own their own film company called The Peoples Network (http://www.tpn1.com) I would like to also shout Traz and Tomeka Tiller. They are playwrights and I have worked in several of their productions. I thank them for being great friends and believing in me to bring life to the characters they have written. Their production company is called Tillervision Productions. ( http://www.tillervision.com) Last, but certainly not least..I shout out my family. They have been there from the beginning supporting me in my endeavors. I couldn’t do any of this without the support of my parents (Melvin and Frances Abercrombie), brother (David Abercrombie) and all of my aunts and cousins.
