We had the good fortune of connecting with Da Truth Da Poet and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Da Truth, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I have been passionate about poetry and performing on stages since the age of 5. The love I have for them both was the driving force that inspired me to pursue an artistic career and start my production company, Raw Poetry Productions. By doing this, I was able to become a humanitarian in my community. I have been helping people with their own artistic journeys, whether writing or performing, by creating a safe therapeutic environment needed for expression. Poetry deserved a certain presence on stage and it was imperative for Raw Poetry Productions to create a platform encompassing all of the arts, as well as a platform for artists who have typically not been on a big stage. Today I do all to can to ensure that we continue to shine a light on artists and talents that often go unnoticed.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am most proud of my poetry productions. It is the main accomplishment that sets me apart from other poets. I strategically designed them to put poetry in the limelight alongside other various art forms. Fulfilling this endeavor was not easy. Many people told me that I could not do it and I met challenges along that way, but I knew that I was destined to overcome it all. I knew that if I just kept pursuing my dream everything would align, and I eventually prevailed. My productions are now the manifested dreams I’m well known for. This journey came with countless lessons. The biggest one is that as an entrepreneur there will always be things needed, but not immediately available. Procrastination will prevent you from acquiring those things, but if you continue to put in the work they will become obtainable. The main thing I want people to know about me is that “I am, because of who I am”. Any future goal I set for myself will align with that. My message to those that want to be on a similar path must first find out who they are in order to be on the path that is destined for them.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Being from Baltimore, I’d want my friend to get the best Baltimore experience. We are the crab capital, so a trip to Conrad’s Seafood would be mandatory. Busboy’s & Poets would be a dope open mic location to visit too. I would take her to Motorhouse which has different attractions inside, we’d visit the notorious graffiti alley for a fly photo shoot, and the Blacks in wax museum to soak in information about our history. On the weekend I would first take her to the inner harbor. We’d be able to sit by the water and talk, go shopping in one of the many stores around, and pick a restaurant we’d like to eat at. We’d then be able to end the night by going bar hopping in fells point.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate this moment of recognition to my mother. She has been my coach and supporter. She helped me work on my performances, took me to countless venues where I showcased my art, and allowed me to network with other poets. She was the one that ultimately introduced me to my path and assisted with making sure I remained on it.
