We had the good fortune of connecting with Cyndi Bray and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cyndi, what do you attribute your success to?
I always knew I had it in me to make the world a better place, but I wasn’t quite sure how…and I certainly didn’t think I would make laundry history in the process!
As a stay-at-home mom for over a dozen years, I cherished bedtime; little did I know that I would find inspiration for my laundry-life changing invention when my kids’ sheets – which were intended to be put back on their beds – were constantly in a wet wad, delaying everyone’s bedtime. I’ll admit that calling the dryer names was not my finest parenting moment.
Since a solution to the age-old bed sheet wadding problem didn’t exist, I tasked myself with developing one. I spent hours staring through the glass of my washer and dryer as the sheets would defiantly twist and tangle…sometimes sending the washing machine off-balance, setting in harsh wrinkles, and taking several cycles to dry. I finally figured out the physics behind why sheets were wadding-up, and then how to prevent it from happening in the first place. With my discovery, I invented a brand new product category, which I got to name…and the Wad-Free® Wad Preventer™ was born.
Consumers and the media took a quick liking to Wad-Free for Bed Sheets. The Good Housekeeping Institute tested it in their Cleaning Lab, and called it “genius”, noting how much Wad-Free speeds dry times. Real Simple, The Today Show, Reader’s Digest, and others quickly caught wind of the Wad-Free, and featured it in their publications. Customers rave about Wad-Free, grateful for all the time, money, and energy it saves.
I pitched my company on season 13 of ABC’s “Shark Tank”, the episode airing in November 2021. Given Kevin O’Leary’s passion for saving consumers money and energy, it’s no surprise that Mr. Wonderful started a Shark fight to secure the deal with Wad-Free!
Wad-Free for Bed Sheets quickly turned a common laundry pet peeve into a successful company and a global household name. I take great satisfaction in having solved such a wasteful and annoying problem, saving consumers a tremendous amount of time, energy, and money. Still, my greatest reward is making my kids proud.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Launching a brand new product category during a global pandemic is not for the faint of heart! I encountered numerous Covid-related obstacles, including a manufacturing hold causing my launch delay, a supply chain collapse delaying production, trade show cancellations negating my planned go-to-market strategy, and retail store moratoriums on reviewing new products rendering a retail presence moot. By the time I launched, my business plan was out the window.
I quickly pivoted, recording my own videos during the stay-at-home order, building my e-commerce website, and leveraging social media. I networked online, reached out to other inventor/entrepreneurs, and built a loyal customer base.
Just two years since my launch, global expansion is happening quickly now; with that comes new challenges. Every time I encounter an obstacle in my path, I draw upon my journey thus far and know that there is nothing I can’t overcome.

My shoutout goes to the folks at the Rocky Mountain Regional Office of the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The USPTO has tremendous resources available to inventors, and they make themselves available to answer questions so that inventors like me can protect our intellectual property rights.
