We had the good fortune of connecting with Curtis Jerrod and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Curtis, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I pursued an artistic career because it wasn’t forced. It naturally flowed. It also allowed me the time to learn better patience and discipline at my own pace.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I started writing poems around 2006. I submitted one of them, Live Strong, into a contest just for laughs, but I ended up winning! I was completely shook. It wasn’t until then that I realized I might want to shape them into songs. Year’s had gone by and around 2010, I began to take secular songs and would rewrite them to what I thought it’d sound like if it were Gospel. I was just having fun with it and I didn’t want to be like everyone else. It wasn’t until mid 2019 that I began to take it serious and started writing my own songs. But during that period, I didn’t believe in myself and had a lot of doubt and hidden trauma. I didn’t know how to openly express myself so I would either internalize it or I’d write. When I’d write, that led me to shaping those thoughts into songs of my own and I felt they could make a positive impact on people. And being in a world full of hate, sensitivity, and barely of accepting, I knew I wanted to break that barrier. I know I’m in the world, but not of the world so I allowed the lyrics to speak the things I couldn’t say on a regular day. It took some time, but eventually I was able to get it out. God took the pain, turned it into purpose, and by His power, I was able to accomplish the success of every song I’ve released, especially my newest release, Favah. This song has been the one God used to open new doors and opportunities for me. It took a lot of discipline, focus, and faith. I even made myself follow a strict budgeting cycle to prepare and set myself up for success. I trusted that any obstacle that came my way had a specific purpose to grow me physically, mentally, and spiritually. I knew it was imperative that I took time for myself to rest and meditate! Learning not to take things personal is a task in itself, but it’s one of the greatest gifts a person can achieve! I want every one of you to know that what’s meant for you is gonna eventually find you! Focus on your mission and God handle the rest!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Atlanta is actually kinda small. A lot of things would probably be done outside the A, but I’d definitely take my friends to Atlantic Station to go to Hobnob. The place is bomb! Drinks are good, the food is AMAZING, and the overall vibe is just epic. Definitely a top 2 and it ain’t number 2! You are can’t go wrong with Six Flags or White Water. If it’s that time of year, definitely a place to be. There’s some dope mountains and lakes, it may be a good bit of a drive, but they’re there. And I’m a bowler, so I’m will always get that in there too. It’s a lot of dope places that have come up so it would be a great time no matter what we decided to do cause we gon make it great!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Of course I want to shoutout God for trusting me with these gifts and using them as a tool to help inspire others to do the same. I’m also going to shout out my mom and dad for allowing me the space to be creative as a kid, it will forever stick with me. I’d like the thank my entire family for the support they’ve shown over the years. Every artist, producer, friend, and everyone who has played a part in the success of my career, from writing, to video ideas, to live arrangements, etc, I shout each and every one of you out! Thank you!
