We had the good fortune of connecting with Coy Kindred and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Coy, what is the most important factor behind your success?
As a Multi-Passionate Black Woman Entrepreneur, having a source of ongoing support and encouragement is the most important factor behind my success beyond the quality of my work. My financial advisor will probably laugh when she reads this, but I truly believe that relationship-building and social capital are just as important as financial capital. When you make yourself an asset to those around you and serve with a purpose, success is bound to follow.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Most people call me a web designer. I call myself a capacity builder. I’m passionate about building power into progressive and personal brands through strategic web design. As a mother of four trying to juggle my personal life and business, creating capacity out of chaos has become a specialty of mine. I love to leverage systems and tools to make life easier so everything in your environment (physical, energetic, and digital) is working for you – not the other way around. I’m most proud of the platforms I’ve been able to build for my clients. I launched Reparations Summer, a Land-Based Movement for Black Liberation; The Women of Knoxville, a People-Powered Community Fund creating economic avenues so small businesses can make a big impact; and re-launched the National Council of Elders, representing over 70 years of organizing, analyzing, and advancing movements toward justice. I modernized the Highlander Center, a historic 86-year-old institution that catalyzes grassroots organizing and movement building in Appalachia and the South. I’m deeply humbled and grateful that my work has been so meaningful and rewarding. It feels unfair not to list every single client, because everyone I work is committed to making an impact, and that’s the type of work I find rewarding. Reaching this point in business at Coy Kindred Consulting wasn’t easy. I had to learn to trust myself. I had to learn to trust others so I could better delegate and build deeper relationships. Leaning into that mindset opened the door for me to partner with an award-winning photographer, Jasmine Newton of Javon Renee Portraits, and create a beautiful project known as the Luxe Branding Suite. Bringing together our love for brand design, web development, and photography allowed us to fuel our passion while setting up clients for success for years to come. One thing I want people to know about my brand and my story is that I didn’t have to contort myself into other’s boxes to find success. Choosing to do things on my own terms, in my own time, and in ways that feel healthy to my well-being have allowed me to produce my best work. Don’t let the world around you dictate how you move through it. Force your reality to shape itself around you by staying true to yourself, your morals, values, and your own vision of success.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
