Meet Dr. Courtney L. Teague | Transformation Coach, Consultant, Professor, & Author

We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Courtney L. Teague and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Courtney, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I think of risk as fuel for a sustainable life. I believe that the deadliest risk in life is not betting on yourself and not taking a risk. A life without risk is a life without the sun; dark without satisfying warmth and illumination. Taking calculated risks is vital to growing as a person. In life, the only way you could fail is if you choose not to learn. Risks are there to edify and elevate us. Risks can serve as a perpetual teacher. Risk has given me the opportunity to open up to my purpose, capabilities, and God-given vision. For years, I doubted my ability to make an impact beyond the public school system, only to realize that the world is my classroom where I can be a global teacher and a global student. When I decided to invest in myself and pursue formal training to become a transformation coach and start my coaching/consulting business, there were folks saying “no” or I should do this/that. I opted to place their voices on mute. I didn’t know where to start but I took the risk or as some folks like to say “a leap of faith”. I focus on change management for individuals and organizations. I know I was put on this earth to support women and men as they define their goals in all areas of their life, create strategies and execute them with the hope of discovering clarity and achieving their success.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
At this moment, I am really excited about my life. I was born and raised by my mom and grandma in Montgomery, Alabama. My dad was incarcerated and was released because he was terminally ill with cancer. So at the age of 7, I was left fatherless. He didn’t leave a trust fund, but he left behind his wisdom that I constantly refer to as I work to be a better version of myself daily. As stats may have suggested, I should have been a replication of my environment, a high-school dropout, and receiving government assistance. However, that was not the life my heart desired as I chose to design a life dedicated to breaking generational curses. I believed that there is always something greater for me to experience in life. I know that my gift and purpose are not for me but for the weak and others who are not able to advocate for themselves at the moment. As I reflect on my current state professionally, it was not an easy road. For I am well aware that anything in life worth having is worth the investment of sacrifice. I experienced verbal abuse, frequent rejection, saying goodbye to seasonal friends, and throwing up the peace sign to the toxic relationships. I overcame the challenges through reclaiming my “why” and time; engaging in ongoing learning; investing in coaching and therapy; saying “no” and scheduling self-isolation so I can recenter. The lessons I learned along the way included doing the opposite of what common people do. I learned that no one is going to save me (beyond God) and it is my job to do it myself for I have all the resources (i.e. therapists, coaches, etc) I need. I want the world to know that you don’t have to do life alone, you have a coach in me.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friends were to come to Atlanta for a week-long trip … during these covid-19 times, we would mask up and head to the DeKalb’s Farmers Market to grab their favorite foods so we can have an “Iron Chef” cook-off at the house! You can never go wrong with it. We would also check out the High Museum of Art to see the latest exhibit and people watch. We love making up narratives as we people watch! My favorite bar is the Ritz Carlton on Peachtree, they have the best drinks and the bartenders get it! We will also check out an Atlanta Hawks game because they will never disappoint you, the excitement is there.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to thank God, my mother, and “framily” (friends+family). I would also like to acknowledge Snoop Dogg for the his Hollywood Star acceptance speech as it aligns with my dedication as well. Last but not least, I want thank me
I want thank me for believing in me
I want thank me for doing all this hard work
I want thank me for having no days off
I want thank me for, for never quitting
I want thank me for always being a giver
And trying give more than I receive
I want thank me for tryna do more right than wrong
I want thank me for just being me at all times
I wanna thank me for being a melanated queen
