We had the good fortune of connecting with Courtney Lewis-Mathis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Courtney, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting my own business started with freelancing. I have experience with some of the most influential PR agencies and I began to apply my skills to my personal rooster of clients. I thought why continue to do all the work for another brand and while I can do the same thing for my own brand. Working with celebrities, nationally recognized companies and fortune 500 companies I realized most of these brands were once a small business. Which, inspired me to go for it and continue to do PR under COCO Public Relations a boutique PR agency in metro Detroit. I’ve gained national press from Essence, Rolling Out, FADER Magazine, XXL Magazine and Live Civil to name a few. Once, I became a mother I was challenged with finding a healthy work and mom life balance. From there I was inspired to create Momtitask a podcast and lifestyle brand where myself and co host one of my PR mentors and sister joined together to host our platform available for working mothers to express themselves. We make resources available to MomPReneurs, MOMguls and stay at home mothers. I created a community I wanted to be a part of something like a sorority motherhood and sisterhood where we support one another.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Momtitask Podcast is a platform for moms sharing real life experiences. We’re a dynamic duo where we collaborate with all women from various industries and backgrounds. Our chemistry is what sets a part to be honest everything is just real organic and natural. The women we interview are women we have real relationships with and candid conversations where we grow and nurture one another. The fact two black women came together to do something we never done before against all the odds had it’s challenging moments. But, I’m most excited for what’s in store the platform is only getting bigger and the opportunities for growth are limitless. This experience hasn’t been easy but totally worth it. I’ve learned a lot about the logistics and everything that goes into having a podcast. We have overcame these challenges with tapping in with our podcast network. Collaborating with my mentors in the podcast community my sis Ray Calloway from Blk Girl Daily who gave me my first ever interview, my big bro from Marquis Taylor from Detroit World Wide Podcast he also been there along the way with helpful tips when it comes to networking in the podcast world. I don’t know where I would be if it wasn’t for collaboration. Collaboration is the key lesson I have learned thus far. Overall, I’ll like the world to know that I am my brand. I eat, live and breathe Momtitask. Momtitasking means multitasking while mothering, while becoming the best version of yourself. Each and everyday I’m working on being a better Mother, Wife and Boss something we take for granted as mothers we forget who we are and I just want to live the life we all truly desire I want it all because we can have it all!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My BFF Erin Lanee if she came back home to Detroit from Arizona I would show her all the new stores in Downtown Detroit. We would go to our favorite mall Partridge Creek and shop till we drop. We love to just chill and ride out listening to all the jams. We would go to brunch and have endless mimosas. Go back to my place and binge watch the Housewives our favorite franchise is Beverly Hills. Have an afternoon nap and plan out our day. My Friend and I are really chill and silly together. We would get dressed and swap purses we love switching up our accessories and go to Somerset Mall did I mention we love to shop. We would shop for our girls trip to NOLA in July 2021 with some of our childhood friends. We’ll grab some Starbucks my bestie loves her tea and lemonade while on the other hand I love my coffee. From there we will go to the studio and pregame from there go to club Monarch this swanky rooftop bar in downtown Detroit where it’s the best view in the city. Get a room at Foundation hotel stay up all night and have a spa day the next. I have the most fun with the people I love the most and people I can be my most authentic self with. Traveling and trying different food/cultures. Sight seeing, listening to music and swimming. Thus, far one of the most exciting places I ever been was when I went to Iguazu Falls a natural tropical forrest with water falls, rainbows and butterflies that land on your shoulders. If I would recommend a place for everyone to go once in their life I would choose South America.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I give all the credit to my children who inspired me on this journey I’ll like to give a special shout out to my husband my number one fan. He believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself at times. I also want to thank my family and friends my support system mother, sister, godmother and friends etc. In addition to that I like to thank my accountability partner and big sis Shenelle aka “Sfree” Freeman the hostest with the mostest together we’re the dream team she’s the big sister I never had. We met in our professional PR organization which I currently serve as the membership director National Black Public Relations Society Detroit Chapter. I’m forever grateful for this organization I’ve connected with some true PR Powerhouses and mentors. Other than that I’ll like to thank my podcast sister Brittany Bacinski who mentioned me for the opportunity for this interview. We go back to our days in college at Western Michigan University and I’m thankful for the recommendation, because as a PR Professional I’m usually the person organizing the interviews and not typically the one being interviewed. I’m grateful to share my story and share my platform to other PR Pros especially during these trying times I want to thank all the journalist, media, bloggers and influencers who keep me going to change the narrative to aspire.
