We had the good fortune of connecting with Courtney Lene’ Alexandre and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Courtney Lene’, what do you want your legacy to be?
The legacy I will leave is to encourage humankind to always “return home”. Home is the sanctuary that is housed within our being and that develops over the course of our life. The place where a single invite issued is to the Self. We are born into a system that forces us to prove our worth immediately. We must learn efficiently, appease our guardians, make companions, and desire to be a part of society. No where in all of that work is there an allegiance to the self, understanding who we are or what we love. I desire to be remembered for how I continuously and consciously “returned home” and how my work encourages that true love exists within the acceptance of oneself.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a graphic designer & photographer by profession and Surreal Digital Collage Artist in the making. Multi-talented, in many facets, and stellar at capturing moments via digital media, writing and on camera. I realized that I have a love for many media outlets. I was in industries where my creativity stifled and my passions blurred, but I’m now using my creativity every day in ways that fulfill my desires. Was it easy? ABSOLUTELY NOT! I had to go through many years of doubt, inefficiency, and working in unsuitable environments to realize I deserved best. I learned that when I’m going through a hard time, and truly anytime, I must take a step back and reflect. This has helped me overcome most of my challenges. I took a break in 2014 and focused solely on what Courtney wanted for two years. I was still working at a job that I despised, but in the end, it offered me the financial stability I needed to pursue my passions. I spent two years focusing on myself, learning who I was and what I liked, which helped me figure out what kind of contributions I could offer the world. The lessons learned along the way were to always return to home, (my inner self) at the end of each day and to appreciate and express gratitude even during the most challenging times. Through that, I have been able to create a life I am continually enamored by. I have two brands, By. Courtney Lene’, a design studio and This Project Kingdom, a storytelling hub that will soon be accessible via an app, and I’m super stoked about it! I want everyone to know that people should be themselves and never regret it. While you’re doing that, document the journey.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I currently live in Brooklyn, NY and boy, there are hundreds if not thousands of places to explore! I would create a soft itinerary, as being a little spontaneous is sometimes the best way to go when venturing in a new place.
For views, we would visit Westlight (inside The William Vale Hotel), The Brooklyn Botanical Garden and The High Line. For food, we would indulge in many cuisines! Brunch locations would have to be Five Leaves (Greenpoint, Brooklyn) or The Grange (Harlem). For drinks and appetizers I’d go to Mr. Purple (LES), Fandi Mata (Williamsburg, Brooklyn). For dinner, I would shoot for Ainslie BK, because my husband is the most exceptional bartender there :), Imani’s or Hole In The Wall (both Brooklyn.)
For dancing the night away, I would recommend Cafe Erzulie and Bembe! There are so much more but the trip would last longer than a week!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicate my Shoutout to my Grandfather, Edward Anderson Judkins, who has always taught me about the greatness within myself. I used to feel pressured to live up to the expectations that everyone had for me – until my grandfather helped me realise that being myself was what made me special.
I also want to give a shout out to my best friend, Brittany Crystal Smith, owner of Teaescence. She has always been there for me and ensured that I got the recognition I deserved.
