We had the good fortune of connecting with Courtney Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Courtney, what inspires you?
Films and cinematography are big inspirations for me when doing photoshoots. I love telling a story in every aspect of my photography. Utilizing my favorite film techniques and changing the perspective of how I take a photo makes my creative workflow better.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started taking photos professionally in 2018 and of course, there were startup challenges, but luckily I had business-minded people around me that helped me grow my brand and photography niche. I currently specialize in photography and videography and I believe the thing that sets me apart from other creatives is that my work consists of a cinematic/nostalgic style. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned from when I started up until now is that “Comparison destroys creativity.” I think that quote speaks for itself, if you spend your time comparing yourself to other people and their work, you will never understand how great your work is and can be. I am pursuing photography with a clear vision, I am so excited to continuously share my art with the world and I know that bigger and better things are on the horizon.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There are a few places in Atlanta that I would recommend, but one of my favorites is Ponce City Market. PCM is a lively place to get food and drinks, it also has a dope rooftop spot called Skyline Park where you can play some mini golf and other carnival-themed games. We also have some concerts and sports games at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Even though me and my best friend love the city, we also love being out in nature too so if you want to go for a walk, I would recommend Stone Mountain Park. There are a lot of interesting nature spots in different parts of Georgia so if you don’t mind a road trip, I’d visit Amicalola Falls State Park, it has a really amazing waterfall and it’s a very scenic area.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have had an outpouring amount of support from family and friends over the years and I honestly don’t think I can thank those people enough for everything they’ve taught me, especially in my times of creative block and financial struggle. I want to start by thanking my mom, I really appreciate her for not pushing me into traditional career/educational norms. Instead, she let me figure out what I wanted to pursue in life, even though she didn’t fully understand it, she gave me the reassurance that I needed, and for that, I am grateful for her and everything she’s taught me.
