We had the good fortune of connecting with Courtney Anglin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Courtney, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I started Irie Naturals because I wanted to make products that glorified the process of doing my 4C hair. I wanted to create a high end experience out of what seemed mundane and troublesome. I noticed that in my natural hair experience I was having to experiment with products until I found ones that worked, so I desired to be a brand that used only high quality, natural ingredients to eliminate “the hunt” for others. Irie Naturals utilizes high quality, luxury ingredients that work. I formulated Irie Naturals with the intention of becoming a community for people to begin to show love to themselves more within their day.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Capturing moments was something I always say I sort of fell into. Being sentimental by nature, I was constantly the one enamored with the tear-jerking moments of life and putting a camera in my hands only further fueled that passion. I developed my style through practice, research, and interviews. I talked to people who had spent much more time doing photography than me… and what’s worth even more… is that I listened to what they had to say. They said, in a nutshell of course, to hold yourself to a higher standard; learn that thing and learn it properly… “always be careful not to rush the shot… It is important to do certain things right, so you don’t have waste time fixing it in post-production.” These wise words never fell on deaf ears, so at times I still find myself rushing a shot, rushing an edit, or subtly trying to edit towards a style that’s a bit… pointless to the frame and the self-correction takes time. I haven’t rushed my progress. It’s been more of a look back and wow… okay, let’s keep building. We’ve come far. I want the world to know that I’m not done yet. I honestly have no reason to stop.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend came through we’d have to hit up C Nails & Spa on Caroline street to get some nice mani/pedis. Then of course you’re in the A, so we HAVE to hit up Mary Mac’s Tea Room or Bougaloo Restaurant Lounge. We’d grab margaritas from Las Costas Nayaritas andddd go eat and grab more margs at tacos and tequilas. Brunch at Sun in My Belly and The Real Milk and Honey… and we’d have to stop by Iwi Fresh for some kind of facial or massage. (I’ve been dying to try it out)
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I dedicate my shoutout to @blakpro, @leight_thegreat, @2lee_jones, @parslybae, @blakproatl, @igatmy_nina, @tashtash_14, @nolls__, and @tlynnr98 (my family).
