We had the good fortune of connecting with Corey “Tre” Henderson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Corey “Tre”, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Over time, the realization that we all need a support system to excel comes fast. Many of us have never had support systems in place and not even the existence of supportive friends and family. The conversation is always find employment, maintain employment, and decades later retire. Nothing against this path of existing but it isn’t applicable for everyone. Being in a situation of existing within a support system has been a culture shock. The necessary conversations that can make the difference between remaining stagnant or succeeding. These are all new developments. Welcomed developments. At this point, the obstacle becomes myself. In terms of work, life, and balance this isn’t an isolated journey. The inclusion of said support system simplifies these plans of operations. This balance when in its purest form makes the daily activities easier to execute and inspires further productivity. This is a work in process and this process has to be fully trusted and understood by the parties involved. The change has been its recognition and application which will intensify as time progresses.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Being a creative mind as maturation progresses intensifies the necessity of unique branding. Whether podcasting or emceeing the content has to be representative of what you stand on. The journey is definitely a slow cook. When delivering content of value the challenge is connecting the following in place and building from that foundation while progressing as a whole within the plans scripted. The Black Male Podcast was constructed with the plans of making the uncomfortable conversations comfortable. This remains the mission. The huge challenge has been increasing the YouTube following as the saturation of product streaming introduces the major challenges of acquiring new listeners and followers. As an artist, an emcee, at this stage of maturity, the challenge is extending your brand to newer territories while never misrepresenting the brand in its presentation. Lessons learned led to light merch for sale and unique promo opportunities for the dos, media, and supporters. One person at time support systems begin to multiply ad brands can flourish when maintaining strict guidelines and focus on this journey. The major lessened learned is what makes you you is the resume and the product the communicated interview. From that point on, consistency becomes a major component that has to be maintained. Anything associated with my brand is representative of the adult with an energy applicable to adulting that builds on accountability and a mindset of growth.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
For me, the most exciting place for me in the states has been Los Angeles. Having a plant based diet they have the best options and the locations rarely have to be repeated. I’ve enjoyed full thanksgiving type meals, Mexican cuisine, and other memorable dishes of the vegan variety. Entertainment is a wide variety of options but never compares to Chocolate Sundaes. Its not even close. Sitting in the front row is necessary. Currently in NC, the options aren’t as frequent but when scheduled of interest the go to options would be concerts and comedy clubs. In addition, the vegan options are increasing and expanding throughout the state. Pure Soul in Durham has been my favorite for some years and for comedy the Raleigh Improv and Charlie Goodnights. In my personal time, a walking trail and the scenery of the botanical gardens brings me peace. Most notably, Sarah P Duke Gardens and the Tobacco District.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The universe has blessed me with a powerful group of individuals that would include my brother LaShon Jones my co-host from the Black Male Podcast, my majority producer Skii Sharp, my mentors Donald Taylor and Kristopher White, as well as my soulmate out West most importantly Tiffanique
