We had the good fortune of connecting with Colin Powell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Colin, how do you think about risk?
It’s very important to take risks because they give us new skills and inspiration. There have been multiple points in my life when I’ve realized I was becoming a bit too comfortable and wasn’t going to achieve all my goals by staying in that space. Whether it’s branching out and trying new food, traveling somewhere new, or making a career change. For the most part, everytime I’ve risked something I ultimately gain a new experience or skill that inspires my work.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Uproot Creative Services, LLC. is a video production company based in Harrisburg, PA. We have a wealth of short films and business documentaries, what we call portraits, produced in the Harrisburg, Lancaster, Lebanon and York area. I think we’re set apart from the competition just because our wealth of portraits and involvement in the community. We shoot in many of these businesses and love showcasing the local art scene. To this day we still have plans to produce feature films, documentaries, and shorts and would love for our community to be involved.

I do think our biggest challenge is educating people on why video is so important. I mean, it’s the strongest form of marketing. Video can tell a story and resonate. It can be funny, sad, and joyful. You can take any message and control it in a fun and entertaining way. I think everyone and every company should have a video on who they are, what they do. It can be short, sweet, and shot on a phone. I just want people to understand that video has an incredible power. What my company does is uses our experience to craft that video and make it look and sound nice.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
In Harrisburg you must try some of the local restaurants. Some of my favorites are El Solo for Mexican, Pastarante for Italian, Millworks for farm to table and local artisans, and Note for wine tasting.

Stopping by the Broad Street Market is a must. There you find all sorts of interesting businesses getting their start in the city and can grab a meal.

In the summer, kayaking on the Susquehanna is the best. Launch from Fort Hunter and land on City Island for a nice leisurely river side tour of the city.

And Midtown Cinema for an art house film you won’t be able to find in bigger theaters.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I am extremely grateful for a supportive wife and family. Ashleigh (my wife) is the driving force behind my growth as an artist and entrepreneur. She is constantly encouraging me to do what makes me happy. We’ve established a lifestyle that constantly encourages us to adventure, experience and take risks. Together, we hold each other to that. For example, she encouraged me to take the business full time. Without her, I’m not sure I would have ever done it.

Also! My family is extremely supportive and very entrepreneurial themselves. It’s wonderful diving into a business with such supportive and creative people around me that I can turn to for help.
