We had the good fortune of connecting with Colin Maher and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Colin, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I began my legal career at a larger law firm in New Hampshire, where I quickly realized the typical law firm model wasn’t for me. I was always entrepreneurial at heart and had a desire to break from the mould of how a typical law firm operates. In deciding to start my won firm, I knew I could approach legal services in a unique way to be sure my clients are serviced in the best way possible without just focusing on the “billable hour.” I also loved the idea of developing my own marketing/branding strategy that wasn’t simply “Law Offices of Colin Maher.” And most importantly, I could start working with the clients I want to work with.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I call myself “Your Lawyer for the New Music Industry.” There is no longer a “status quo” when it comes to drafting any agreement in the music industry. From the everchanging landscape of streaming and social media royalties to the brand new world of NFT’s and licensing through the blockchain, I strive to represent clients of all sizes and types the same way: anticipating the ways in which to protect my clients’ interests and maximizing all opportunities.
I also strive for easier communication for music creators and small businesses to find legal representation. Oftentimes those who are not sure if they need legal counsel are afraid to simply contact a lawyer to find out. I’ve developed relationships with trade groups and non-profits in an effort to both educate and open lines of communication to decrease the instances where a lawyer wasn’t used when one should have been, and dire consequences were suffered as a result.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
For the most part I’m going to try to avoid Broadway altogether, unless I’m showing them a good band at Acme Feed and Seed, catching a show at the Ryman or heading to a Preds game at Bridgestone. Although it’s yet another place that keeps changing in Nashville, Printer’s Alley is still a blast and Bourbon Street Blues and Boogey Bar still becomes all my visitors’ favorite. In a COVID-free world I’m trying to bring my friends to as many shows as possible at iconic venues like Exit/In and Marathon Music Works. And since I live out in Mt. Juliet, it’s always great taking a boat out on Old Hickory lake and hanging at the Cedar Creek Marina’s restaurant, Fish Tales.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
None of this would be even close to possible without my soon-to-be wife, Brittney. She was the one who gave me the ability to think outside the box and not simply put my head down and do what I am supposed to do after law school. When I came up with the idea to move to Nashville to start my business, she was more excited and believed in the idea more than me, and still does to this day. Her ongoing support and encouragement keeps me going day after day.
In addition to Brittney, my friends and family have been unbelievably supportive and encouraging throughout my journey. I can’t thank them enough for their inspiring words from day one through the present.
