We had the good fortune of connecting with Codeine Shorty and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Codeine, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
Well I’m from Chicago, born and raised (Westside) and out south. I was born into a family that had a passion for music. I use to sit n watch my uncle n older guys rap their songs they made in studio and every since then I was motivated by making music. Now once me and my cousins aged we started writing music n it seem to just stuck with me. My mother also play a big role my freshman year she brought me recording equipment once she seen how talented I was as well as my little brother.. That helped me so much because I started to find my sound while learning the basics of audio engineering. Now I record myself in the car n people would be surprised because it’s still great quality of work. So yeah my history definitely helped me get to where I’m at now.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Well what sets me apart I think is my word play n my metaphors. I love making melodic music it brings the best out of me. I’m excited about this year I was able to release 3 mixtapes for free (TrapBaby, Virus Flow 2, and Signed 2 Poverty. I was also recognized by 3 major labels this year, still independent right now as we speak. Consistency is what got me to the point where I’m at. Hours and days in the studio no sleep. It was a little hard because I had to work a job as well to keep the bills paid while trying to do the music.. I’m learning that relationships are worth more than money and can get you in the places money can’t get you in (if you catch my drift). Being genuine and having a respectful integrity can help you in the long run as well. Never rush things too as well. Take your time and don’t listen to spiteful comments people might have to say about you. Well my brand is RNFL (RichNiggasForLife). I came up with that brand a year ago. To me it represents the struggle since us blacks is always looked as poor, criminals. I was thinking what sounds more happier, what do people really want to be in life that come from the struggle and there u go.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well if your in chicago you know I would suggest Harolds Chicken or Sharks Chicken. That mild sauce ummm ummm. The best ever mild sauce n lemon pepper. Then you got Baccis pizza as well as Giordanos. Now if you like tacos I’ll say go to chipotle. Chinese or Asian food Panda Express, I love the orange chicken. Now if u like Dairy Stuff like ice cream I’ll say go to JoJos MilkBar they have wonderful things for the kids too . The madhouse on Madison where micheal Jordan played at or you can visit n watch the bears play at soil dee field or if like baseball we got the Cubs n whiteSox arenas.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
So my first shoutout is God because without him none of this work is possible. Second my mom granny and my soon to be wife. Those ladies man they are tough. But they all had moments where they never gave up on me and never steered me in the the wrong direction. Especially my mom because I wouldn’t have thought about investing my money into equipment. My grandmother always a sweetheart and believed in me. My lady she apart of the team how active she is during videos or helping me correct words during a session. I would also want to shoutout Million Dollars Worth of Game podcast, (Hosted By Wallo&GillieDaKid. Those guys really talk since into our youth. Especially with what’s going on in the African American environment. Wallo and Gillie has definitely sharpened my brain with decisions I make versus when I was young n dumb yeah those guys deserve everything god have in store for them. Even my cousins they even seen the vision seen I was little I love them men even though we argue but they just want what’s best for me. Last my in-laws that’s like a second family to me that never gave up on me
