We had the good fortune of connecting with Cocoa Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cocoa, what principle do you value most?
The values/principles that matter to me are loyalty, kindness and treating others as you would like to be treated. It seems that these basic values have lost their way in basic human interaction. Narcissism and selfishness has become far too norm in today’s society. People have taken the term “by any means necessary” to a level of disregard for the feelings of others to get what they want. Consequences used to be a determining factor in how you moved and treated those a person claimed to love and/or respect. Human Beings operating in a space of no accountability or conscious has taken over the the most basic of human interaction, leaving a trail of bitter, mean and hurt people. I choose to operate in love, respect, kindness and loyalty and far too many times it is not reciprocated, but almost seen as weak or easily manipulated. In the end, I find myself leaning on my discernment far more when dealing with people nowadays, but will never let the actions of others change my way of treating others the way I’d like to be treated, but give me the ability’s to see who and what is for me or against me, and handle accordingly.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My name is Farah Cocoa Brown, I am a stand up comedian, actress, writer, author and multiple business owner. What i feel sets me a part from others in my field is my ability to make people, whether on screen or on stage, feel like they’ve been friends with me forever. I’m most proud of my consistency in this business, and the fact that so many opportunities now come from my work ethic, my character and my reputation of bringing a realness to all my characters and stand up. It HAS NOT been a crystal stair, envy, rejection and jealousy run rampant in this business and building a strong sense of self worth, picking my battles and developing thick skin has been my saving grace. The lessons I’ve learned the most is that a NO in this business is NOT a NO to you, your integrity and character. Do not take those NOs personal and always keep it moving. They are always watching you. What I hope the world will know about me is I am a woman that walks her talk everyday, I make people feel like they matter in my presence and I am a Mom first and that love is what I share with you all.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Upon arriving at the airport, our first spot would be Spondivits seafood restaurant by the airport, that lobster bisque is the elixir the Gods. Afterwards we would head to city to Atlantic Station to walk it off. That night we would take in some live music or a comedy show at Uptown Comedy Club or Atlanta Comedy Theater. The next day I’d take her to the MLK center and tour the city to see all the incredible murals of our late civil rights leaders. Then we’d hit the Trap Museum and definitely do the Tyler Perry Studios tour, so she could see my Star on the walk of fame and the White House replica for the hit show “The Oval”. We’d definitely hit Cascade skating rink on “Grown folks” night, and being a single mom like me, we are most definitely spending the day and night at Jeju Spa, where we can reboot with Himalayan salt saunas, foot massages and full body scrubs. Can’t come to Atl and not have the whole fried catfish at Mary Mac’s with some mac & cheese, and some rib tips from This is it Barbeque. If the weather permits, a drive up to Lake Lanier for a boat ride and some more R&R.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to shoutout my Grandmothers, who taught me that having a gentle demeanor is actually more powerful than being the loudest in the room. My 5th grade teacher, Mrs. Marshall, for seeing my talents and gifts first and encouraging me to use them. My Aunt Edith and Aunt Florine for showing me that class and being a lady NEVER goes out of style. My parents for allowing me to fly as high as I could when it came to my dreams. The great Mrs. Angela Bassett and late Great Ms. Cicely Tyson for being the epitome of class and realness, no matter how famous you are! And my son, Phoenix, for being the ABSOLUTE BEST SON EVER!
