We had the good fortune of connecting with Coco The Conversational Freak and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Coco, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I was working 16 hour shifts and putting in so much work for a company that did not value it’s workers and I thought “if I can work 16 hour shifts for someone else’s passion, I can do the same for myself”. After 9 years I was burned out and realized I was cheating myself by not valuing myself like I valued that job.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a sex coach who’s focus is to help build sexually confident women who put themselves first when it comes to sex and feminine wellness. Through virtual classes, girl talks, and my Patreon membership, it is always so refreshing and exciting to see women being so receptive and wanting to take action and ownership when it comes to their sexual confidence.
There are many sex coaches but very few who look like me (milk chocolate & natural) so in a way I feel like it is important to show up and represent because colorism is very much still common.
It took me years to get to this level of comfort when it came to sex. I was not always this vocal. After being sexually assaulted at the age of 15, I felt like I was constantly burying my truth and searching for my lost innocence all in the same breath. I was insecure & looked for validation in all the wrong places. When I faced my truth and started doing the inner work, I unlocked a part of me I didn’t even know existed. I soon realized that this was the reality for many women and I wanted to make sure I could impact them in the way that I needed when I was navigating the confidence space.
A major lesson I learn along the way is that the process of healing is not this beautiful linear journey people make it out to be. You have a high’s and your lows. There will be days you think you are over it, and days where it feels like it just happened all over again and you hit the reset button but, the beautiful part is the person you become on the other side. So when you feel like it’s pointless and you’re stuck, go harder for yourself. The person you are proud of is on the other side.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am always buried in work so this is a hard one but, I must say for the weekend I would take my bestie to Stone Mountain (the view is amazing!) and sometimes I love connecting with nature. There is one place that I would absolutely take her for southern food and that is Mary Mac’s Tea Room. I am in love with their fried chicken until someone proves otherwise. I think it is important to connect with your inner child so Skyline Park at Ponce City Market would be a move one night. In the winter I love how they have spiked cider and you can ice skate. Adulting and acting like a child- the best of both worlds!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
To the 3 people that have impacted my journey- I don’t think I would’ve made it this far mentally, physically, and emotionally but, I promise to keep it short and cute! First my life partner Calvin who saw my full potential before I did and pushed me out of my 9-5, invested in me, and always encourages me. To my sister Addy, whenever I need an ear, sound advice, and a confidant, you are there 1,000% of the time. And to my bestie AC, you met me at one event and opened your home when we moved down south so we could find our dream living community. I would not be where I am without these 3 people. The journey is not always smooth but having solid people makes it easier.
