We had the good fortune of connecting with Claire Lin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Claire, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
My name is Claire Lin, I am a 2D motion designer. I mostly create 2D illustrative motion and 2D graphics motion.
I majored in English Literature in my undergrad studies, so I am also very into conceptual storytelling when it comes to the idea of portraying how I feel about certain topics visually, and having the audience look at my perspective without directly telling them what the meanings are behind.
I got into the motion design industry by exploring film editing. I started video editing because I was very curious about how editing works, and I got so into it right after I started. Back in my freshman year, I had an assignment of filming a part of the story of ‘Jane Eyre’, I was very excited to direct, edit and script the whole short film. My professor at the time looked at my work and encouraged me to pursue a film major. As I explore more of film editing, I found my passion in motion graphics.
I enjoy vintage looks and minimalism style, so I usually will add moving texture in the background or apply texture onto the objects I animated, or just simply play around with gradients and simple graphics. Although I made more 2D motion pieces, I am also approaching different styles, such as 2.5 D, 3D or tactile motion.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I was very excited to be part of the graphic design team for a career fair, CoMotion 2023 at Savannah College of Art and Design. I designed some of the visuals for the event, such as showcase title cards, showcase closing, directional signs, and GIF stickers on Instagram. I got to learn more about design knowledge from cooperating with many talented people on the team and I also got to experience working with about 50 people.
One of the important things I have learned so far is finding a community. There will be a ton of opportunities to exchange ideas, inspire one another, or just be each other’s support system. Instead of making a motion piece for many hours and ending up keeping it on your laptop, try to share it with others, too. I get to learn more by accepting feedback from my peers and get to learn different points of view by sharing my motion works.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Most people come to Savannah to experience ghost tours or the slow pacing lifestyles. I’d like to recommend visiting different squares on each street. Each square has its own specialty that some people might have their favorite while visiting them. On the other hand, walking on river street here in downtown Savannah is like going back in time. The bricks and the style of each building might intrigue you to learn more about the history of the city. There isn’t much to do in this small town but it is truly a beautiful place to visit. If you had a chance to visit Savannah, make sure you visit all the places I mentioned.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
To me, there are many people in my life that have brought me to where I am right now. My family, friends, professors, classmates, and the Motion Graphics community have been really supportive on my journey. It is very hard to break down all of the things I am grateful for in just a few paragraphs but I’d still like to thank a specific professor that I met in college.
As I mentioned above, I met a professor in my first year of college that she has me and my teammates remake our own version of Jane Eyre. Luckily, I got to experience directing, video editing, scripting, exploring camera movements, and more. The moment I was filming the video, I realized my passion for film production. My professor even graded and commented on our group projects the best she has ever seen in years. The compliment she gave us has encouraged me to try out many different approaches. Thus, I’d like to give a big shoutout to her on this platform. I found my passion in Motion Graphics because of her encouragement.
