We had the good fortune of connecting with Cicily Williams and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cicily, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
One of my absolute favorite quotes is by Richard Bach. In it, he states, “There are no mistakes. The events we bring upon ourselves, no matter how unpleasant, are necessary in order to learn what we need to learn; whatever steps we take, they’re necessary to reach the places we’ve chosen to go.”
As a chronic overthinker, this quote speaks to my soul! Countless times I think, “I wish I had done ___”; or “I can’t believe I waited so late to ___.” This quote is a constant reminder that life events are purposeful and nothing happens by coincidence. Everything is part of a greater plan — even failures and things we deem mistakes.
When I reread or remember this quote, it helps me stop fretting over what could have been, because it helps me realize that every twist and turn I take is leading me exactly where I’m meant to be! It forces me to embrace the journey because it’s all part of a magnificent design that’s tailored just for me!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I have had a strong passion for design since first learning to create a document using Microsoft Works on my Windows 98 PC in middle school. Gratefully, over the years, I have been able to pursue said passion (and upgrade my hardware), ultimately becoming an ADDY award-winning print and digital designer. From designing layouts and directing photoshoots to discussing typography, color schemes, and holding critiques, I have always enjoyed collaborating with clients, creating original concepts, and soaking up every bit I can about design and marketing.
My devotion, however, lies in helping small business owners create the brand of their dreams. I understand that small businesses are the heart and soul of entrepreneurship, and I love being an artistic ally. I discover my clients’ business goals, values, and aspirations using personalized consultations. My mission is simple yet powerful: to help them build the brand of their dreams that reflects their unique vision and resonates with their target audience.
It took me a while to get to the point where I was comfortable advertising my design skills and marketing abilities. The biggest obstacle I faced when creating my business was myself. I allowed fear and imposter syndrome to convince me that I wasn’t ready, that I wasn’t good enough, or that I didn’t know enough about marketing and design. However, after over a decade of working in this field and a proven track record of happy clients (and some therapy, haha), I knew it was time to step out on my own and pursue my dreams.
In September, I am launching a second business, Byrne Street, that focuses on eco-friendly home decor. Sustainability is another one of my many passions, and I found that this was a fun way to blend eco-conscious practices with design and decor. Byrne Street is named after my childhood home in Alabama.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m an aesthete so most of my fun revolves around the arts! Visiting The High Museum of Art is a must. They have the best visiting exhibits — and their permanent collection is incredible. They also have after-hours Jazz nights every 3rd Friday and it’s a whole vibe.
While in Midtown after visiting The High we’d hit up Mary Macs for some good Southern comfort food! I’ve never had a bad meal there — and I love their coconut cake for dessert.
Seeing a show at The Fox Theater is another must-do item on the list. From Broadway shows to concerts, experiencing a show in the historic Fox is a feeling like none other!
For my sportier friends, we’d definitely visit The Battery for a Braves Game. The game itself is sure to be a good time (especially if you catch one during Fireworks Friday), but visiting the Braves History Museum within the stadium is also a treat! I cried when I saw all of the Hank Aaron memorabilia and statue for the first time. He’s from Mobile, Alabama and that’s close to my hometown so it felt like a piece of home.
Lastly, I take all of my friends for tacos at my favorite restaurant — Mexico Lindo! There are a few locations, but my favorite one is in Austell. If you catch them on the right night, the DJ plays R&B and Southern Soul music. Fajitas, margaritas, and blues is a combination I never knew I needed!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First, I wouldn’t be here today without my parents. They allowed me the space to be creative in the arts — starting me in piano, dance, voice lessons, etc. — while my other SEVEN siblings chose to go down a more athletic-focused path. However, my siblings, especially my oldest sister, always have my back in everything I’ve endeavored.
Secondly, an incredible group of professors at Auburn University taught me everything about the world of design, design business, and marketing. I poured literal blood, sweat, and tears into that program, but the outcome and relationships it birthed are irreplaceable.
Lastly, I’m grateful that Dione Bryant Williams took a chance on me and allowed me to help develop her brands from the ground up. Working with her furthered my passion for building design systems and helping small business owners create their dream brands. Also, my therapist Dr. Erika Hill is the G.O.A.T. and the very definition of Black Girl Magic. I’m so grateful for her guidance and encouragement.
