Meet Chop God | Producer, DJ & Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Chop God and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chop, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
My love for music is where it all started… It mostly comes from my older brother. He always had a deep music collection. We were army kids so moving around a lot gave us a wide variety of music cultures. That greatly influenced my music taste and gave me a head start on learning about music. We would eventually make Stone Mountain, Ga our home in the mid ’90s. Fast Forward to the early 2000’s when the internet took over the music industry. This was my time. The internet started to birth independent acts that would simply make their own music and put it out to the internet themselves. The biggest example of that at the time was Soulja Boy in 2006. He produced is his music on FL Studio so I decided to give it a try. I didn’t know how to use the program at all but I’ve basically studied hip hop beats for so long that I picked up the art of sampling pretty quickly. In 2007, my sound early on was a mixture of early Kanye West & Timbaland. My producer name at the time was ‘Major’. I started out producing for a local artist from my side of town named ScottyATL around 2010. I was very green to the industry and had a difficult time balancing working a 9-5 and pursuing a career in the music industry. I continued to produce music but it was simply a hobby because I was scared to give my all to this dream. In 2011 another form of music piqued my interest, Chopped and Screwed. The Chopstars from Houston were putting out chopped versions of the latest music. I wanted in. I reached out to one of the members named Slim K and told him that I was interested in learning how to chop music. Surprisingly he was super cool and began to walk me through his process. That is when I fell in love with chopping music. I felt that I was so good at it that I named myself “Chop God”. Me being from the Atlanta area, I knew this was an untapped market. Everybody raps and produces but I knew being a chopped and screwed DJ would help me stand out. And it did. My first Chop God mixtape in 2013 was a collection of Future’s biggest hits at the time. The response was so great for my first time putting music out myself. I started building an audience and was getting millions of downloads. I had over 50 mixtapes. I was putting out music at a rapid pace but there were several sites that were not ok with what I was doing and tried to put a stop to it. But I knew I couldn’t quit. I had already given up on producing and I didn’t want to give up on this. So, I launched ChopGod.com in 2014 in order to have all of my music in one central place. From there, I’ve continued to build my brand. Now I have chopped and screwed mixes available on all streaming sites. I also got back into producing. Now I have three main artists that I produce several songs for: Dope Tomorrow, Lanez Cobain and Akilz Amari
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am an artist. I am a producer. And I am a DJ. I’m mostly proud of the fact that I do this mostly on my own and have built an audience that is worldwide. I design all of my album covers and do all of my own promo videos. I’m going to be working on designing merchandise very soon. Overall It is simply my ear for music that sets me apart from others. Not many can do what I do.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Prior to the pandemic, partying in East Atlanta & Edgewood would be the go to location… Great music & bars
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
