We had the good fortune of connecting with Chiaja Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chiaja, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
There really wasn’t a thought process behind starting my business but more so a leap of faith. I’ve always wanted to be an entrepreneur and have my own business in the beauty industry so when the time came, I went for it! Making it all come together was the hard part, such as creating a business name, branding ideas, content, location, licensing, etc., but it was fun creating my own business from scratch.

What should our readers know about your business?
Building my brand has been far from easy, I’m constantly faced with obstacles that make me want to throw in the towel. Through faith and perseverance, I push forward. I’ve been through so much to get to where I am that I refuse to fail! My voyage into entrepreneurship began when I was fired from a major waxing company, I worked for for almost 3 1/2 years, two weeks before my maternity leave. It was devastating to say the least, being a new expectant mom with my livelihood taken away in an instant. Funny enough, It was a blessing in disguise though, it allowed me to finally take the step to work for myself after contemplating it for over a year. I was also able to enjoy the new journey of motherhood I was now embarking on and spend time with my child without having the burdensome of a job. I offered mobile waxing services in my spare time to obtain clientele and produce income. Which started to become more of a hassle than it was worth so I sought to have a psychical location to work from. Little did I know, it wouldn’t happen until a year or so later when I moved to Atlanta, that God would make it all come together. Success doesn’t happen overnight and I’m still working to obtain it everyday!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Honestly, I don’t really get out much so I’m not all that familiar with hot spots in my area( Gwinnett). I will say, for good eats I’d recommend Escovitchez because I love their vegan options and it’s nice place to go to with someone who isn’t vegan. Haven Lounge ATL for a good happy hour with a little vibe, Selfie Wrld Atlanta for some fun pics for content, and I’ve been dying to visit Fade n Facet for a girls night out.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First off and foremost,I have to give all praises and thanks to God because without him I am nothing! I’d love to give credit to my friend Jojo for encouraging me to step out and open my own brow suite when opportunities fell through for me trying to work in other salons. Also, my friend Kee, for encouraging me since moving to Atlanta, to start my business and establish myself as a beauty professional here. Last but not least, a MAJOR shoutout, to my grandfather for helping me with funding to establish my business. I am able to do a lot with his support and I pray that one day soon I am able to repay him as well as my grandmother for all they’ve done for me.
