We had the good fortune of connecting with Cheryl Merriweather and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cheryl, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I am from Savannah, GA. Conversation, laughter and storytelling has always taken place in the kitchen since I come from a large southern family that loves to cook. From helping my grandmother make homemade biscuits in the morning, to watching my mom prepare desserts for holiday dinners, my passion for baking started when I was just a little girl. I actually started Unforgettables by accident. In 2013 I got laid off from my career job. I had been working with this company since I graduated from college ( 9 years) so I was devastated to know that I would have to look for a new job and possibly a new career. I’ve always had a passion for baking and drawing so it only made sense to do what I knew best and what made me smile. On March 8, 2014, I decided to introduce the world to Unforgettables.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Unforgettables specializes in custom cakesand treats. We take price in our products not only looking great but tasting great as well. We provide custom cakes and treats for all occasions. We are an online business based in Atlanta, Ga. We just celebrated our 6th year anniversary. Last year I decided to take the business on full time. It hasn’t been easy but it’s definitely been rewarding. I’m most proud of being able to get through this pandemic this year and working closely with my team to brainstorm on ways we could ensure that our business stays afloat. We opened an online store this summer and discovered new ways to continue to provide our customers with delicious desserts. We created new shippable products that would put a smile on our customers’ faces( Check out our NEW Cake Jars and DIY Cookie Kits). After launching our online store we saw an immediate response from our loyal customers and also new clients. It felt so good to know that our customers were still supporting us and to know that people still wanted to celebrate things but were doing so in a smaller and safer way. In this sixth year of being a business owner I have learned that you have to take chances, that you will always be fearful, you stay positive and be patient. Just don’t give up!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would definitely have to take them to my favorite eating spots which include : Another Broken Egg or Buttermilk Cafe (Breakfast) 5Church (Lunch), The Optimist or Pappadeux (Dinner), Touring/Walking/Relaxing -Center for Civil and Human Rights Museum -Atlanta Beltline Late and Top Golf Night Sweet Tooth -Sublime Donuts
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I give credit to my support system, Team Unforgettables! Without you I’m not sure where we would be, Your support and encouragement has definitely gotten us through tough times.
