We had the good fortune of connecting with Cherish Perkins and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cherish, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I started Cherish Perkins LLC a few months after I graduated from the University of Nebraska Lincoln in June 2022 with a Bachelor’s in Fashion Merchandising and minors in Business, Art, and International Studies. Ever since I was five years old I had a passion for fashion, I always sat at the kitchen counter sketching people in fashionable outfits for hours. I looked forward to getting the latest fashion magazine or watching a runway show, however, growing up I didn’t see many individuals like myself. I wanted to be the change and use my gift and talent to create an environment where everyone felt truly represented. Women’s apparel has always been my favorite area and my most substantial expertise, which is why I started in that particular area and later expanded to kids’ and men’s apparel. Through my apparel, I give individuals the opportunity to Embrace Every Moment While Cherishing Their Inner Self.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My work specializes in one-of-a-kind apparel for individuals who are ready to rule the world while making a statement. I hand sketch and construct custom apparel pieces from everyday wear to formal wear. These pieces include dresses, jumpsuits, suits, and recently a wedding dress. I differ from my competition, because not only do I offer custom apparel but also personal wardrobe styling and sewing alterations. My business is a one-stop shop where you can leave with not only something for yourself but your whole family. I’m most proud of all the opportunities I’ve had in just a little over one year in business. I won 2nd place in a pitch competition and was the youngest to compete, I’ve had several news interviews and publications written about my business, and lastly have built a strong client base. I got to where I am professionally today through a lot of practice and education. I’ve been taking sewing and fashion classes, truly learning about the fashion industry for 8 years. It wasn’t easy, but I kept my faith and kept pushing forward. I learned to take it one day at a time and everyone’s path isn’t the same. I want the world to know that I am a 22-year-old African-American female who has had a dream of becoming a world-famous fashion designer since I was 5 years old and has been working very hard to make my dream come true. I love making people feel beautiful and enhancing their self-confidence through my apparel.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Omaha Nebraska downtown has a very nice vibe. I love going to the coffee shops downtown everyone is so friendly and welcoming. I would take my friend to The Table Coffee Co, It’s a very nice cozy spot and they sometimes have live music. There are also really nice vintage shops to shop at downtown such as the Flying Worm Vintage. For fun artsy activities. Painting with a Twist and The Makery are great options. Lastly, if they want to go out for a fancy dinner, J. Gilberts is the best. Their steak with salted baked potatoes, and green beans with pecans is my favorite dish. Wait we can’t forget about dessert, eCreamery has the best ice cream in town.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to shout out my parents Cedric and Angel Perkins. They played a huge role in my fashion career. My parents saw at an early age how passionate I was about fashion and put me in several sewing and art classes. They bought me my first sewing machine when I was 10 years old. They’ve been very supportive throughout my entire career and always told me I can do anything I put my mind to.
