We had the good fortune of connecting with Cher McRae and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cher, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
From an kid painting Easter eggs the night before Easter with my mom to freestyling poetic manuscripts in high school to writing and personalizing monologues as an artistic adult, I have always had the itch. I think better insight to this question in why did Art choose me. A great deal of creativity is therapeutic. Now in addition to self-soothing expression, I also notice how my fervency towards my craft enriches others to think deeper, pursue harder, relish in their own humanity then at that moment it gives each of my rhetoric’s a second wind. It chose me and I did myself a purposeful favor and chose it back!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am an actor FIRST…
A very close second is Film Director.
What I am most proud of? When I look back over my beginning and reflect on the peaks and valley’s I have to say, I am pleased that not one time I genuinely wanted to give up! Instead I would get mad as shit at life and tell, “I don’t care what you throw at me, watch me reach my level of success,” as it related to my career. I knew without a doubt I would reach levels in my career that were unfathomable not only to others but to myself. But I was committed to proving to myself that if God can do it for my neighbor, at any moment He will most definitely do it for me too. What was uber helpful was looking up videos or reading other actors rags-to-riches stories and that help me to see, persistence and prayer can go a very long way. I played the long game, still playing actually…that it what I am most proud of.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Ha! Please don’t be tickled by my response but I work a great deal. Since Covid it has been in my best interest to stay low key and away from large bodies of people and groups, even with a mask, because productions administer Covid test so often, If I happen to get booked for a job and test positive, I could lose that job aka PAY CHECK. So in short, I would create an amazing experience at my home which most often looks like a night of movies, games, karaoke, cooking (or) a day of BBQ, conversation, drinks, card games, and trash talking. I am glad my folks are very similar to me, aside from shopping, lol, we don’t need a whole lot of outside experiences to have a Good time; just each other.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to acknowledge everyone that supported my journey when no one heard anything but crickets. lol. That moment I made the intimidating decision to move forward with in pursuit o my acting career. For everyone that rocked with me when the tree was bare in the dead of winter, when my career had not yet budded; was just a mustard seed of faith. To all those, you know who you are, you paid my bills and expenses, who babysat my son when I had to jet to set, local or travel, who didn’t look at me sideways, dismiss me or cut off communication with me over the years when I told them I had to sit the get-a-way, outing, long conversations on the phone out because I had an audition, class, or prefer to save my money just in case I had to travel on a whim for work/project…This one’s for you all…My REAL MVP’s!
