We had the good fortune of connecting with Chelsea Moore and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chelsea, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I started making decorated cookies once a year, only at Christmas. The time it took to bake, flood, and decorate felt like forever for a high school kid. I was using Ziplock bags for my piping, the four colored food gel packets from the grocery store, and just adding water to my store bought icing. After I started my career, I needed an outlet to help reduce my stress. I have always been artistic but never into painting. Coming right out of school, I did not want to spend the money on art supplies so I figured the best way was to combine two things I loved, eating & art. I started watching YouTube videos on technique and a lot came through practice to better my skills. I would give away my cookies as gifts and one day one of my coworkers encouraged me to start selling them. I am not one to naturally promote myself, so I have to give a lot of thanks to her because this is when I started getting orders just by word of mouth. I started to see this could be a real business, and that’s how it all began.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The best feeling of this job is having your client see their designs come to life when they see the cookies for the first time! It is such joy and I am happy to have been apart of that! Having this business as well as a full time corporate job and personal life can be tough. There is a lot of time management involved! To save money, I draw my own designs and cut out each cookie by hand which can be a challenge when it is a large order. Which truly makes this a very custom cookie!
Some lessons I’ve learned along the way is that you need to take time for yourself. If you are feeling overwhelmed, it is ok step down for a little time off. Don’t get burnout or you will slowly lose the joy your hobby brings you! My story is similar to many other small businesses out there. It starts as a hobby and turned into a business! One day we all hope we can make it our full time job but until then we just keep pushing and enjoying that something we love can also help provide for our family!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Atlanta is home to Coca Cola and Chick Fil A. We would obviously stop by Chick Fil A for the best chicken biscuits (or chicken minis!). I also love going to the World of Coke for the tasting experience. And we cannot forget the Georgia Aquarium, no explanation needed!
After the main attractions, I love exploring the different cuisines in each of Atlanta’s neighborhoods.
Virginia Highlands – Truva (Turkish)
Decatur – Chai Pani (Indian)
Brookhaven – Canton House (Dim Sum)
Reynoldstown – Ria’s Bluebird (Southern)
Brookhaven – Food Terminal (Malaysian)
Decatur – Folkart (Southern Brunch)
Inman Park/Decatur – Victory Sandwich Bar
Midtown – The Consulate (International)
We would also explore the beltline, go to a concert at the eastern, and enjoy all the microbreweries.
Breweries:
Decatur – Inner Voice, The Cottage, Wild Heaven, Lost Druid
Reynoldstown – Three Taverns Imaginarium
Grant Park – Eventide
Midtown – Sweetwater, Atlanta Brewing, Monday Night
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to thank every one of my Frito Lay coworkers would bought my first orders of my cookies. Without them, I probably would not have had the confidence to start this business.
