We had the good fortune of connecting with Chelsea Haddad & Amanda Hall and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chelsea Haddad, do you have a budget? how do you think about personal finances?
We do! We implemented the Profit First system of budgeting for our business in April, and it’s been incredible! If we could choose one change we’ve applied to our business that’s made the most positive impact in our day to day operations, this would definitely be it, and we couldn’t recommend it highly enough.
The basic premise is that you have multiple bank accounts. All money goes into your income account, and you disperse all funds into the other bank accounts based on your predetermined percentages. One of those accounts is profit, and as a small business, this has felt really good to make sure that paying ourselves is a priority. We also have accounts for things like taxes, operational expenses, marketing, and more.
The author wrote in the book about several businesses that implemented the strategy, including our very own wildly-popular local baseball team, The Savannah Bananas. What an inspiration to see a local business that’s so successful budgeting the way that we do!
Because this has been such an exciting and stress-relieving change for our business, we are both working to incorporate the Profit First system into our family budgets.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
We are an herbal skin care company that focuses on healthy, happy skin. One thing that sets our company apart from others is our focus on using healing herbs in our products. The thing we get most jazzed about is the feedback we receive from our customers. Some of the feedback we’ve gotten has truly floored us, and it motivates us to keep making effective and beneficial skincare. We have made it to this point in our business by having grit and putting one foot in front of the other. One thing we always say is “Trust the process.” The process may not always be what we envisioned, but when we intuitively trust and put one foot in front of the other time after time, it has not failed us yet. Your question is, was it easy? The answer is a hard no, and that’s the truth. But is it worth it? Hell yes.
We are two women with a history of skin issues, and we formulated these products for us as much as anyone else. We wanted products that didn’t have weird ingredients and that we felt good about using on ourselves. Our mission has always been to help support people to feel comfortable in their own skin. We are a judgment free skin care company and our one and only purpose is to be helpful in your skin journey, so you can love the skin you’re in.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We love to grab coffee at Foxy Loxy and Troupial and hike the trails at Skidaway and Wormsloe. We also love evening walks on Tybee, dancing at Starland Yard, and grabbing food at Forsyth Farmers’ Market. If someone’s visiting, we recommend they check out Scout Savannah as a great resource for an events calendar and places to eat, drink, and visit.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
We want to shout out to Brighter Day Natural Foods! It was because of Brighter Day that we both met in Fall of 2017. It was because of Brighter Day and the owners at the time, Janie and Peter Brodhead, that Chelsea saw potential in having a career as an herbalist. She learned so much from Peter and Janie that still inspires her work today. When we started our business, Brighter Day was one of the first stores that carried our products, and the store general manager Aimee Schmidt, whom we love so dearly, has been our biggest cheerleader and has believed in us from the very beginning.
