We had the good fortune of connecting with Chef Bri and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chef, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
I started my own business back in 2016, fresh out of pastry school, when I was also working 2 full time jobs, and was single with no kids. So much has changed since then. I now have a husband with a very demanding career, a 5 year old about to start elementary school, and a 1 year old entering into the toddler phase. There are some days where my business has to take a back seat, and other days where my family does. As every parent knows, trying to fit in time for yourself is very difficult. Also trying to fit in time for making your dreams a reality, almost impossible. Sometimes you look online and see people that have been doing this job for less time seem like they’re so much farther along than you, skillfully, financially, successfully, etc. And every part of you says “what’s the point?” The thought of quitting, giving up everything you’ve worked so hard for, the sacrifices you and your family have needed to make, it can feel suffocating. But then you look back overtime at all the things you have accomplished, big or small. You look back at your first creations to now, and the brand you have made for yourself, and you realize you can’t walk away. You can’t give it all up and go back to working for someone else. You still have goals and dreams you want to make reality. While maybe not as successful as someone else, or as far as you want to be, that doesn’t mean you aren’t exactly where you’re supposed to be. It’s passion, faith, and dedication that will keep pushing you to be your best self. It’s up to you to decide what that means for you.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
While decorating is an art, so is the baking. It’s always been difficult for me to say what sets me apart from others because I try to avoid comparing myself. I would say that even in this economy while there’s hundreds of ways to make life easier in the kitchen, I still bake everything from scratch. Cakes, Desserts, Icings, Fillings, whether it’s making brownies, zesting a lemon or making a reduction, I’m making it myself. and most of the recipes I use, are my own creation.
Additionally, I don’t say no very often when it comes to designs. I love when my clients give me a challenge and trust me to achieve the desired look. Even if I am doubting myself, I’m still excited to try it. Honestly, you have to be willing to fail in order to succeed. My first sculpted cake should have never seen the light of day, but I still keep all of my old baking photos, to show me how far I’ve come. I have burnt many cakes, I’ve struggled getting the textures right, I’ve failed to achieve the look I was going for. But you just keep going and keep trying, because practice makes better, and you’re supposed to enjoy the journey.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’ll be honest, I moved here 3 years ago, but I still haven’t seen very much of Atlanta itself. Our favorite places to eat include Corazon Mexicano Cantino (Marietta), Golden Apple Buffet (Snellville), and Hudson Grille (Midtown/Kennesaw). We would also probably take them to the Aquarium, some of the local parks, and Marietta Square. Around the holidays, we love Stone Mountain Park for the Christmas Village.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My clients and small business associates are some of my biggest supporters. Whether it’s ordering from me, leaving a review, sharing a post online, booking me for their clients, or even genuinely checking in on me. I have an amazing professional circle around me! You’ll often see me post other businesses on my Instagram, where you can also find a highlight of some of the preferred vendors I love to work with. Also, I would not be where I am without the support of my family, especially my husband. I bake from home, so sometimes I have to solely focus on work and can’t give them the attention they need. But they are constantly encouraging me to keep going and allowing me the space I need to be creative.
