We had the good fortune of connecting with Charmica Bernette Curry and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Charmica Bernette, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I started my business a few months after my son announced to me that he was ugly! He had severe eczema that left him scared, irritated and frustrated. As a mother, I had to find a solution!
I make natural, junk free skin care products that help with skin issues such as eczema, porosis, dry skin and other underlying skin issues. My products are safe for children and persons with sensitive skin. All of my skin care product are infused with Sea Moss, which is a mineral from the ocean. I create soaps, body butter, sugar scrubs, beard oils, eczema salves, lip balms, beard and hair oils. I use and stand behind every product I create. I would never sell or recommend anything I don’t use myself!
I am an entrepreneur at heart, and love being able to be creative in ways that will help others feel better about themselves and the skin that they are in!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am an educator of little humans. I’ve been in the Early Childhood Education arena for over 20 years. I have taught from Pre-Kindergarten to 3rd grade. However, Pre-K and Kindergarten have been my best classes. I love connecting with my students, and watching them grow during the school year is still something I enjoy watching.
Getting to the place I am now in my professional career has not been easy. Times have changed, and as an educator, I have had to learn to change as well. Despite the changes, the one thing that has remained constant for me is that I remind myself daily that I do what I do, because of my love for children, and because my purpose on this earth is to pour into them and be that positive vessel in their life.
During my years as an educator, I’ve learned that patience is definitely my portion! I learned to listen harder, and love deeper. Because there are some children that just need a little extra attention than others. And I am here for it… the good, the bad and the ugly, that comes along with being an educator.
It is because of my love for children that my brand was created. My son, one of my first loves, is the reason that I make products that help to heal the skin from the outside in! No child, or adult should ever feel insecure about the way they look, because of skin issues.
My brand is here to help while giving people an all natural, and junk free option to helping to heal the skin.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend was visiting the area we would go so many places. Day one would included a full spa day experience, with massages, facials, manicures and pedicures. We would indulge in a good breakfast first at Gut Busters, one of my favorite breakfast places, and then have a light to lunch…maybe a smoothie and then get dressed up for dinner for some authentic Thai food at Bangkok Station.
The other days of our time together would include going hiking in Sweet Water Creek Park, weather permitting, driving up north to visit the mountains, shopping, the movies, and Piedmont or Centennial Park. Hopefully there will be a few festivals happen so we can hit one or two of them as well. We would go roller skating and visit Sugar Baby Creamery to satisifiy our sweet tooth!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shout out Shay Samuels, the CEO of Let’s Talk Business Consulting Group. She has been a driving force in helping me see beyond myself, and do exactly what God created me to do in this moment. Shay is a strong black woman, a wonderful wife and mother, and a leader. She is a great example of what leadership , support and mentorship is at it’s finest.
