We had the good fortune of connecting with Charles Taylor and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Charles, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I created a music publishing company, DJ Chase Publishing LLC. I have two DBAs – Worldwide Soundz Records and DJ Chase Radio. When I started building my music publishing company, I first wrote out my basic business plan, and wanted to understand my expenses and profit. Once I saw my overhead wasn’t that expensive becuase I already had my own recording studio, it made it easier. I also taught myself what are every function of a music publishing company and how it runs. I learned the passive income business verses being in the service business as a mobile DJ.

Then once I had all the logistics laid out, I just needed to register the LLC with a registered agent, and I also found a music lawyer, that could write my contracts to sign song writers to my publishing company. I found a really good registered agent service, that also does trademarks. The rest is history.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a urban DJ and Music Producer. I love hip hop, r&b, and dancehall. What sets me apart is my technical ability as being both a dj and producer, I hear music much different. I live in absolute rhythm. Everything in music has to have rhythm. I’m most proud as to having my own office space and studio in a real office. I’m also most proud of writing my first book this year also – The Record Label Cheatsheet Vol. 2 – for sale on Amazon.

I got to where I am today professionally, by working hard and making a lot a lot a lot of sacrifices. I don’t hang out, I’ve missed family events, I sacrifice a lot to be where I am today. It was not easy, I overcame a lot of challenges by understanding that God is testing me to see that I deserve his blessings. I overcame a lot of my challenges by prayer.

I’ve learned two big lessons, focus on your own well being, and help people from a distance. At times we want to help everyone, but not everyone deserves our help.

I would want the world to know about me that if I can do it, anyone can do it. You just have to pray, take care of your health, and work hard. My brand is about black ownership, and thats what I represent.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m from New York City, but now I live in Charlotte, lol – I’m still learning Charlotte myself. I like the out doors and the woods, so I would show them the trails in Harrisburg, or maybe the Carolina Premium outlets.

I like soulfood, so I would take them to sunset soul food.

I would say just the city of charlotte is beautiful so just drive around, it’s always something to do.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
