We had the good fortune of connecting with Charlene Autumn and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Charlene, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
Originally I am from New Jersey, but I was raised in Atlanta, GA. I come from a Haitian household which if you don’t know anything about Haitians/Caribbean households, you’ve got two choices. Doctor or a Lawyer. So I chose Makeup Artist! Not going to lie, my upbringing was pretty great. I’m an only child, I got everything I needed, and then some. When I told my family and friends I wanted to pursue makeup they supported me. Although this wasn’t without some push back from my parents, but once they saw how serious I was about it they let the “doctor, lawyer dream” go. Watching my parents work for other people definitely impacted why I knew it was up to me to break this cycle. I knew I couldn’t see myself in 5-10 years working for someone else forever, and I’m so blessed to have makeup as my talent to do so.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My artistry sets me apart from everyone else because I don’t just focus on what’s trendy and cool. I listen to my clients and what THEY want. I look to enhance their natural beauty, not create a new one, and I’m always looking for ways to grow and improve how I run my business to provide better service.

I got to where I am professionally by going into other establishments, and being treated in ways that I would never see myself treating people when owning a business. I saw other people’s errors and made sure I put customer service before anything. It wasn’t hard getting to where I’m at today, mostly consistency, keeping your eyes on the prize and having a good group of people you can go to for help and advice.

Lessons I’ve learned along the way is- Not everything is going to happen when you want it to happen, and it’s important to have a plan A, B and C! What I want the world to take away from me and my story is that no one was given a dream or talent for no reason. Act on it and live your life to the fullest because at the end of the day you are in control of your life, no one else.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my friend was visiting these are the places I’d take them for a good time to start the weekend off!:

10:00am- Breakfast at “Toast on Lenox” they have the best chicken and waffles I’ve had and the drinks are bomb!

11:30am- Lenox Mall! Let’s be real everyone always forgets something back home when traveling so we’d have to go to the mall to shop and get something cute for the club that night.

1:00pm- Lunch at a local taco spot I love to go to called “Taco T”. They have the best tacos, don’t say I didn’t tell you!

2:30pm- Ride scooters around Piedmont park, can’t go wrong with that! and most likely get some ice cream in the area.

4:00pm- Ride the Ferris wheel

5:00- Go visit the Trap Museum

6:30pm- start getting ready for dinner

8:00pm- Dinner at “Suite Food Lounge” to get the party started.

10:00pm- Elleven 45, Opium, Compound, etc.

3:00am- Waffle House , because what else is there to do at 3am after the club

4:00am- KO!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to shout out Morgan Victoria Tatje (IG: @mediamopro), Isabella Beltran Almaraz and Rico Collins for their consistent support and encouragement! These three people have never given up on me, been my left, right, and third hand!, and always had faith in me even when I doubted my self.
