We had the good fortune of connecting with Chanté Dent and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chanté, as a parent, what have you done for you children that you feel has had the most significant impact?
I believe that my commitment to parent from a position of love, honesty, and transparency has had the most significant impact on my children. My husband and I give our children a safe space to talk about whatever they want to talk about without the fear of getting in trouble or looked down upon, and they do. When we are honest with our children about our mistakes and accomplishments, we find that it gives them the confidence to do the same. We have also vowed to treat our children the way we expect to be treated. We set the standard by not yelling at one another, and we do our best not to yell at them. Stern at times, but not screaming or demeaning them. Overall, we ensure our children understand that we do not expect perfection, but we want to see progress.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
In 2007, I committed to helping individuals heal from sexual trauma – through conversations, volunteering, starting a non-profit, and recently through my book, My Lemonade Recipe: Turning Life’s Sour Experiences Into Something Sweet. I now mentor individuals throughout their healing journey. Perseverance led me to my work. I am where I am today because I decided to heal from sexual trauma. The pain of being violated sexually is dire, and it seeped into every area of my life. I did not want to live in that pain any longer and began utilizing the resources available to recover. It was not an easy journey. At times, I questioned my ability to help anyone because I felt like my life was messy. I soon realized I was the perfect candidate. My mess became my message. When I felt discouraged by various challenges, I remembered my “why.” My “why” continues to keep me going. It breaks my heart to see individuals lack value or live in a prison of emotional pain because of trauma and abuse. I crossed over, and I vowed to help others get to the other side, from emotionally bound to emotionally free. Along the way,  I have learned not to minimize my pain but to categorize, process, and release it. I ask myself, what category will this go in? The categorization helps me to put it in perspective. A perspective that will enable me to process in an emotionally healthy manner, in which I become better and not bitter. I no longer live my life from a place of pain or people-pleasing; I now choose to live from a place of peace and purpose.  When I help others recover and discover themselves after sexual trauma, I can express amplified empathy because I lived it. I passionately help others heal emotionally, love earnestly, and live free because I know it is possible!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would suggest Lake Lanier, to enjoy all things outdoors! Now, it has to be during the summer to take full advantage of everything Lake Lanier has to offer, from Margaritaville, the spa, great restaurants, a party cruise, and the water park too! Now to take it up a notch, I would suggest spending a day at Chateau Elan Winery & Resort.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I once heard that if you encounter a great woman, thank her Dad, and once she is married, thank her husband. My dad, Clarence Bandy, has always been an anchor. Once married, the unconditional love continued through my top-notch husband, Howard Dent. I am grateful that our marriage is a union of love, support, and teamwork. Both are to be thanked. Both have helped me navigate through many life challenging situations.
