We had the good fortune of connecting with Chantae Wilson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chantae, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
A few years after finishing college, I got the urge to create something that I could sell to others. I have always had a love for crop tops – plain crops, tie-dye crops, anything cropped I wanted it. But I felt there were not that many options to go for a crop top so I started to think, ‘why not me?’ The Pandemic shook the world in 2020 and I found myself with time on my hands since we all were not able to be outside or in the streets, so I said why not now? I just got tired of thinking about it and finally said just do it, no matter if it fails a year from now at least I can say that I tried. And from there, Mooi was created.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
We want the world to know that its ok to be yourself in a world full of “images” that we are suppose to withheld for individuals. Our brand was made for individuals to be comfortable in there own skin. Mooi means “Beautiful” or “Handsome” in Dutch ( I’m Dutch/African American). We want people to be out there being true to their selves while wearing an attire that allows them to be who they really are. There are many hardships with starting a business, but that’s just like anything that you start with no experience. We still persevered through our hard times and stuck together with our faith and trust in each other to keep going even when we felt like giving up. We overcame a lot by staying consistent and believing that we could make this business work. We just want people to know its ok to be different and not fit it with the world, as long as you love yourself and the person you are becoming nothing else matters.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
MooiRebel would love to extend a major shoutout to our family and friends. Without the support from our direct network of family we would not have been able to make it to 4 years of operation and continued growth. Also, thank you to SauceUnlimited by Darrion Wiley-Hunt, for continued mentorship and navigation support through the clothing industry.

We would like to thank each and every client that has supported us and we look forward to many more to come!
