Meet Channing Muller | Marketing Consultant

We had the good fortune of connecting with Channing Muller and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Channing, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I have always been a big “go with your gut” person. Some of the decisions I’ve made in life didn’t always make sense to others. Decisions like:
• Leaving a perfectly good, enjoyable job to uproot myself to another city without a job in hand.
• Starting a business after I got laid off rather than finding a new job with a predictable paycheck every 2 weeks
•Moving to a new city with zero connections (x2)
•Downsizing from a 3-bedroom house I owned to a 2-bedroom apartment I rent in a totally new city
On paper these may not seem like the “rational” decisions. They seem like “taking a risk.” However, each and every time I KNEW in my gut it was the right decision for me so it didn’t seem like a risk at all.
And you know what? Each one paid off in many, many ways.
That all being said, I do NOT make decisions on a whim. Beyond my gut, I also looked at it rationally and financially.
I had been to each city I moved to and had a taste of what daily life looked like. I researched the new client opportunities. I studied the numbers. I stuck to a budget and I knew how many sales/clients/projects etc I would need to make it work.
I took a “calculated” risk based on reflection and gut feelings of what’s right for *me*, even if it didn’t make sense to others.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I think one of the biggest challenges is continuing to create and put out content when you may not see the immediate result you want. It can be very disheartening and have you question if what you *think* your audience wants from you is *actually* what they want.
However, if you are patient and truly believe in your gut (yes it’s that important to be in tune with yourself) that what you are doing *is* the right thing, then it WILL pay off.
Everytime I question whether all the content I am creating is worth the time and effort, I then start to get a STREAM of emails, DMs, and outreach asking to work together. It ALWAYS pays off, even if the vanity metrics (i.e. likes & followers online) don’t give that impression.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
When I picture a support system or mentor, I don’t think about it the way others might. I am not conjuring images of who served as head cheerleader for DCM Communications or my biggest teacher along the way in business. What I think about is who challenged me the most, made me think the most, and inevitably helped me grow the most.
While this may be a little cliche, the true answer to each of those is my immediate family: my dad, mother and brother. They are always the first ones to cheer my success, support me when big decisions have been made, and challenge my thinking when they’re still a work in progress.
Some may question whether challenging my thinking can really be considered “support’ but I definitely do. Honestly it has taken longer than I care to admit to get here, but now I really see that the challenge shows that they are paying attention enough and care enough to make sure that I really see ALL sides of an issue/decision. PLUS, they give me the outside perspective in a collaborative vs. combative way, which is key.
