We had the good fortune of connecting with Chanel Watkins and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chanel, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Initially, my thoughts were very confident and proud in the work that I could produce and the services I could potentially provide. I had great supporters that made me feel very encouraged, so I did not enter the journey with doubts; which is a lot different from other business owners. Once I got started and started to receive my first gigs, discouragement and anxiousness began to enter my thought process. Not being as knowledgeable on my craft and making beginners mistakes, took a shot at my self confidence. I had no clue starting out all of the effort and time it would require, I just knew i had a gift to bring to life.
What should our readers know about your business?
The name of my business is Purposed Images. The name derives from purpose in itself. I only look to capture images that come from purpose, but I do believe all things serve a purpose. I try to brainstorm and work from a place of thought and bring that vision to life. That is what I believe sets me apart from others; I work from purpose, for a purpose. I am proud that I have stuck beside my business and chose to keep my vision alive. I have gone through many phases, and with the business still being fairly new, I am excited for all the new stages I’ll encounter with it.
I got to where I am today business-wise by remaining persistent. Even in times when I was not consistent, I remained persistent. I was persistent in marketing, persistent in attending business events, persistent in perfecting my craft. I kept photography on my radar in some capacity.
Nothing worth having is easy is my belief. Everything worth value has a difficulty factor. So no, it has not been easy and I still face challenges as a fairly new business; but I focus on my strengths and work to better the knowledge and skills I do have. I focus on bettering my business and showing unconditional love and support to other businesses.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Some fun interesting places I would recommend is Hell or High Water, Black Rabbit, and Pin + Proof which are all very intriguing speakeasies here in Louisville. Really chill and relaxing locations to look nice and wind down.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’ve always felt greatly supported in my endeavors, whatever they may be. My initial thanks and gratitude goes to source, God. I am a strong believer that my spiritual relationship and practice has brought me much guidance. Secondly, much appreciation goes to my partner, mother, siblings, and mentors who keep me uplifted and motivated.
